Description

This 17-day expedition is to ascend Tupungato. It's one of the highest volcanos in the world (6570 m), in the province of Mendoza, Argentina.

Not far from the overcrowded camps of Aconcagua, the Tupungato Park offers more than an enchanting trip through the untouched Andes. The Park protects the most beautiful 6000 m peaks surrounding Aconcagua (Tupungato, Polleras, Plomo and Juncal).

The imposing cone of the volcano dominates the region. From the summit we can admire the most hidden and virgin valleys in the Andes. In this mountain the rests of the Stardust still remain. It was British aircraft that crashed in 1947, and was a mystery for 50 years.

I have also an alternative expedition to climb Tupungato Volcano from the south face. In this case, it includes the Andes crossing through the Portillo pass. Itinerary

Day 1: Mendoza

Welcome at Mendoza Airport. Transfer to Mendoza. Equipment check and welcome dinner.

Day 2: Tupungato

Transfer from Mendoza City to Tunuyán City to get the permits in the rangers office (80 km). Then transfer to Puesto Santa Clara, in Tupungato (80 km). Here, we prepare the loads for the mules and we share a typical barbecue with the locals. Overnight in tents.

Day 3: Durmientes Refuge

Approximation trekking from Santa Clara to Durmientes Refuge at the Azufre Gorge. 8 hours trekking. Overnight in tents.

Day 4: Tupungato valley

Walk up along the gorge to the Portezuela del Azufre (4500 m). Then we start to walk down to Tupungato Valley (3300 m) where we spend the night. 7 hours trekking. Overnight in tents.

Day 5: Base camp

Early morning. After crossing the Tupungato River we go to the Base Camp (3800 m). 4 hours trekking.

Day 6: Camp 1 and return

Food and gas transportation to Camp 1 located on the International border dividing Argentina and Chile at 4500 m. Return to Base Camp. 8 hours trekking.

Day 7: Base camp

Relaxing and acclimatization at Base Camp.

Day 8: Camp 1

Base Camp – Camp 1 (4850 m). Overnight at Camp 1. 6 hours trekking.

Day 9: Camp 2 and return

Food and gas transportation from Camp 1 to Camp 2 (5450 m). Return to Camp 1, 8 hours trekking.

Day 10: Camp 1

Relaxing and acclimatization day in Camp 1.

Day 11: Camp 2

From Camp 1 to Camp 2, 5 hours trekking.

Day 12: Summit

Summit day! 9 hours trekking.

Day 13: Extra

Extra day in case of bad weather.

Day 14: Base camp

Camp 2 – Base Camp. 6 hours trekking.

Day 15: Durmientes Refuge

Base Camp – Portezuela del Azufre – Durmientes refuge. Overnight in tents.

Day 16: Tupungato

Durmientes refuge – Puesto Santa Clara where our vehicle is waiting to return to Tupungato City. Hotel check in. Farewell dinner.

Day 17: Mendoza

Transfer from Tupungato to Mendoza City.

We will have a satellite phone for emergencies and a radio VHF.

Round trip mules service to the Base Camp (20 kg each) is included, and mules assistance in case of river crossing, when necessary. We have one porter for tents and stoves.

I am a Mountain Guide (AAGM and IFMGA) from Mendoza region. Born in 1968. I live in Chacras de Coria. I am also professor of Physical Education.

I really like to offer guided mountain activities and instruction on different types of terrain like rock, ice, snow and altitude and its different modalities such as trekking, mountain skiing, medium and high mountain climbing, and also sporty, classic, alpine and big walls climbing.
