Climbing Mojon Rojo in El Chaltén, South Patagonia, with incredible views of Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy with Merlin, IFMGA certified guide.
2 Days
Jan - Apr, Oct - Dec
Mojon Rojo is the first Red Mountain to the south east of Cerro Fitz Roy range. When climbing Mojon Rojo, from the summit, we will see the peaks of this incredible mountain range as well as those of Cerro Torre.
Starting from El Chalten, this is an ideal program to do as an initiation to Patagonian needles.
Itinerary:
Day 1
Transfer to Hostería El Pilar. Trek towards Laguna Sucia, passing trough Piedras Blancas Glacier and Poincenot Campsite. From Laguna Sucia is an scree and scrumble terrain to reach the rock cave below the Rio Blanco Glacier. Aproaching time: aprox 5hs. Vertical gain: Aprox. 800m.
Day 2
We´ll start before sunrise from our bivouac (5-6 am aprox), after 45 min uphill trough rocky terrain, we´ll reach the base of the glacier. From there we´ll continue with crampons and rope to towards the rocky ridge.
We´ll continue with scramble ( grade II & III) and short-roping, plus one pitch of IV (15-20m). The views from the top are very impressives! After a break on the summit (2163m), we´ll make one rapel and downclimb the same way back to the rock cave. We´ll get our camping gear and head back to El Chaltén.
The activity will take around 12hs total, with an elevation gain of 900m aprox.
This program is an excellent semi-technical experience which will take us to the heart of Patagonian needles.
This place offers everything a climber could desire, from excellent quality granite to uniquely wild rime formations. All this is set in a dramatic environment, with the endless Patagonian steppe to the east and the broad expanse of the Ice Cap, an enormous network of glaciers that drops into Pacific Ocean fjords, to the west.

I live in El Chaltén since 1998. I'm originally from Bariloche and I started with mountain activities when I was 15 years old. I've done climbing and ascents in many mountains of Patagonia, Perú, Bolivia, United States and Europe; such as Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre, Alpamayo, El Capitán, Mont Blanc and Aconcagua among others. I'm also a Ski Instructor and I am passionate for backcountry ski.
I speak fluent English, Italian and French and have been leading trips and expeditions for more than 20 years. I work together with a group of guides, so if I'm not available for the trip you request, one of my colleagues will guide you!
