Description

If you are looking for a challenge that gives you some experience in the Patagonian mountains, this 3-day climbing trip to Cerro Solo, in El Chalten, is definitely a great option for you.

Cerro Torre (2121 m) is an isolated peak close to the village of El Chalten, a top mountaineering and trekking destination in the province of Santa Cruz.

From the summit of this peak of singular shape, you can have some stunning views of the Patagonian Ice Field, Viedma Glacier, Mount Torre and Fitz Roy.

In order to get there, you have to ascend through the steep 50° slopes of its top glacier. So this is a great opportunity to improve your mountaineering skills!

You can find the complete itinerary for this 3-day trip below. Before the expedition, we’ll meet to discuss the last details. We’ll also check that you have all the necessary equipment.

I recommend spring and summer months (especially from October to March) for this trip.

My partners and I are a group of IFMGA mountain guides based in El Chalten. Please get in touch with us if you want to be a part of this climbing trip to Cerro Solo. It will be a unique Patagonian experience!

Itinerary

Day 1: Lake Torre

To start, we’ll have a 3-hour hike to Lake Torre, where we’ll cross Fitz Roy River using an existing zipline.

Then, we’ll walk for another 1.30 hours until we reach the camping area on the side of Solo stream. Total altitude change: 500 m approx.

Day 2: Summit!

We begin with the ascent. There’s an altitude change of 1600 m, that can be done in about 7 hours, to the summit.

We’ll traverse through a rocky terrain until we reach the glacier. We’ll cross it using different techniques. Then, we’ll descend through the same route, about 4 hours until we arrive to the camp.

Day 3: Return

After picking up the camp we’ll go back to the village by the same route than the first day. It will take 4 hours.

Mountain Guide

IFMGA/UIAGM guide from Argentina.

I’m trekking guide since 2009, and became fully IFMGA certified in 2014.
I’ve climbed in many destinations in the Andes in Argentina, and also in Perú, Brasil, France, Spain, Italy and Austria.

I work together with two other colleagues and friends, Indio and Tomás, who are also IFMGA. So if I’m not available to guide you, one of them can do it.

The three of us live in El Chalten, where we practice our profession and develop our passion for climbing and skiing. And we want to share it by opening the doors to all those who want to live their Patagonian experience in a safe and unforgettable way.

We are also committed to mountain training. Therefore, we can give you the basic tools to move in the mountain safely and smoothly. That's why we offer courses for all levels depending on the terrain you want to train. We give lessons of rock climbing, ice climbing, glacier transit and mountain skiing.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Maxine

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
