Description

Welcome to this 3-day climb to Cerro Solo. During the ascent you'll enjoy one of the best views of the famous Continental Ice Field. It is also one of the mountains that are less affected by the rough weather conditions of the region. So you have no excuses!

The first ascent to Cerro Solo was achieved by Enrique Sabatte and Roberto Matzi, members of the expedition that reached Cerro Pollone's summit. Today I would like to guide you there and help you do it.

It will be an unforgettable experience not only because of its exciting ascent. But also due to the spectacular landscapes that Cerro Solo offers us from its top.

All participants should feel comfortable using crampons and some ice and snow techniques. You don’t need prior climbing experience. However, if you have it you will be perform better during the ascent.

It is mandatory to have a good fitness condition since it'll be a demanding trip. Also keep in mind that you must carry a backpack of about 25 kilograms. You have to bring your personal equipment (clothes, sleeping bag, insulation mat, etc.), group equipment (tent, pots, heaters, etc.) and food. Anyway it is possible to hire porters.

Please find more details about the day by day itinerary at the end of this description. I also offer many other alpine climbing programs in El Chaltén. You can check out this 3-day ascent to Aguja Guillaumet.

And if you want to book your places (I can guide 3 people) fill out the form and get in touch with me! It'll be my pleasure to help you climb the amazing Cerro Solo.

Meeting point

El Chaltén. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to El Chaltén. The easiest way to get there is flying from Buenos Aires to El Calafate. For those who come from other points I also recommend getting to El Calafate and from there, take the bus to El Chaltén. The transfer El Chaltén-Electrico River Bridge-El Chaltén is included in the price.

Itinerary

Day 1: Grande Glacier - Solo Stream - Chico Glacier

We will meet at 7:00 a.m. to check the equipment. We will then walk 2,5 hours through a Lengas Forest until we reach the left brunches by the Grande Glacier. There lies the Torre Lagoon, where the Fitz Roy River is born. We will cross the river through a zipline with harness. We will continue walking along the right side until we reach the buttress of Cerro Solo. We must ascend about 150 meters to the Solo Stream. Now we’ll have to turn right in rocky terrain where we will have to use our hands or ropes. Finally we will arrive at the foot of the Chico Glacier where we will set up camp.

Day 2: Upper Glacier - Cerro Solo

We’ll get up very early in the morning to take advantage of the quality of snow after a cold night. We will begin to ascend on a slope of 30 to 35 degrees of snow and/or rock. After a couple of hours we will reach a narrow path between the Upper and Lower Glacier. We’ll then cross a crevasse by the most appropriate place. A short section of 45 degrees of ice will take us to the Upper Glacier. After another hour we will reach the summit where we will be able to appreciate the Patagonian South Ice, Cerro Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre, Las Adelas, among others. We will start our return to the camp where we’ll spend the night.

Day 3: Back to El Chaltén

Once rested, we will have breakfast, disarm camp and return to El Chaltén, where a hot shower and a delicius dinner await us.

Mountain Guide

UIAGM/IFMGA Mountain Guide from Argentina

Based in El Chaltén, south Patagonia, since 2000. I was the first guide to complete the AAGM (Argentine Mountain Guides Association) complete training platform.

I did the first Argentinean guided ascent of Mt. Fitz Roy via Supercolouir route (la Supercanaleta). I have guided Aguja Guillaumet more than 25 times. I also guided Aconcagua, Alpamayo (Peru), Matterhorn (Switzerland), Mont Blanc, Dent du Geant (France), The Rockies & The Bugaboos (Canada), Torres del Paine (Chile), among others.

I am also member of El Chaltén Search and Rescue team. I have several WFR certificates with different schools such as NOLS & Fundacion Ecomed.

I speak Spanish, English and French fluently

My biggest passion is Alpine Rock climbing & Ski Mountaineering. Get in touch with me if you are interested in discovering the unique spots in the Fitz Roy massif, and other gems around El Chaltén! I work together with a group of guides, so if I'm not available when requested, one of my colleagues will guide you.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Maxine

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
