Description

This 5-day ascent to the Domuyo Volcano is a perfect opportunity to have a first experience in high altitude.

Domuyo is a volcano located in the Cordillera del Viento near the city of Chos Malal, in North Patagonia. Thanks to its 4709 meters of altitude it is the highest mountain in Patagonia**.** In addition it has a unique beauty due to the surrounding glaciers and volcanic valleys.

The ascent to Domuyo Volcano implies a technical difficulty. Besides that, we must take it slowly in order to have a proper acclimatization. I usually say that it is a high altitude ‘school’ program, very useful to have a prior mountain experience before bigger challenges in other areas of Patagonia.

You will find more details of the day by day itinerary at the end of this description. I have some confirmed dates in November as well as other departures in February to private groups.

As a local AAGM guide I know this region as the palm of my hand. That way I can guarantee the safest experience. Actually you can check out this article which is about an ascent I led in Domuyo in November 2016.

Itinerary

Day 1: Zapala/Chos Malal - Domuyo Base Camp

Start from Zapala or Chos Malal. We will drive 400 km to the foot of the Domuyo Volcano. From there we will walk 30 minutes towards the base camp that is at 2400 meters.

Day 2: Las Oyetas Camp

We will go uphill to Camp 1 “Las Oyetas” which is at 3300 meters. It is an easy walk of 5-7 hours through a beautiful surrounding. A perfect trek to get well acclimatized.

Day 3: Summit day or acclimatization

Depending on weather and group conditions we’ll decide if we try a summit attack or if we do another acclimatization ascent to the summit’s ridge at 3800 meters.

The way to the summit is quite hard through steep slopes. Besides, depending on the time of the year we can find ice, snow or rocks. The ascent takes 7-8 hours so we must start early in the morning (2 or 3 AM). That way we’ll reach the summit by midday. From the top we can see beautiful views of the Tromen volcano, Wayle and the south of Mendoza. We will then descend to the Camp 1 for other 4-5 hours.

Day 4: Extra day or summit day

Backup day. In case we didn’t make it in day 3 this is our summit day.

Day 5: Back to Zapala

We will get back to basecamp and drive to Zapala. If we have time we will finish the expedition with a visit to the hot springs of Aguas Calientes. That way we can recover energies after such an effort during the previous days.

Mountain Guide

AAGM and aspiring IFMGA guide from Argentina.

Since a very young age I felt attracted by the mountains, so I started climbing and spending time there. That's how mountaineering and climbing became not just an activity, but a lifestyle for me.

This lifestyle allowed me to discover many places, and get to know beautiful mountains. And I also realized that I could earn my living with this passion, so I became a guide,

Nowadays I have the big pleasure of working in the place I like really love: the mountains.

I worked a couple of seasons guiding in El Chaltén, and nowadays focus mainly in North Patagonia and Mendoza regions.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
