The Cerro Tronador is a majestic mountain with a very attractive glacier’s landscape. Besides that, it’s an accessible summit in terms of distance, time, lodging and logistics.
During this 3-day adventure you will also learn a lot about traffic and rescue techniques and many other ice climbing skills.
The ascent to Cerro Tronador is a classic expedition in the Nahuel Huapi National Park. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to venture into the world of mountaineering in an easy and comfortable way. In fact, it is an excellent mountain school where you will be able to practice and learn many basic and important techniques.
On the first day, we will ascend the Meiling Hut. The journey will take us about 5 hours during which we will practice some techniques of progression in glacier. This refuge offers a friendly and warm environment with a great view and the best facilities.
The second day will be the most intense since we will attack the summit of the Argentine peak of Cerro Tronador. It will be a round trip of 9 to 12 hours.
Finally, on day 3 we will descend to Pampa Linda. But before that, if you still have energy, we can practice some ice climbing in the cracks near the hut. After lunch, we will start the descent to Pampa Linda for 4 hours.
I can extend the expedition 2 more days with a traverse by the Alerce Glacier to Paso de las Nubes. We will spend the night in the Rocca Hut and then, descend to Pampa Linda or explore the Frías valley. Return to Bariloche by boat from Puerto Blest.
Get in touch with me so we can talk closely about the program details and plan this trip together. I will be happy to be your guide!
Our ascent begins at the foot of the Cerro Tronador, in Pampa Linda with breathtaking views of the whole mountain. We will begin our walk along an easy path through a native forest of huge Cohihues. After crossing the Castaño Overa stream, the trail gently gains altitude for a couple of hours. Upon arriving at La Almohadilla, the vegetation begins to disappear to be then replaced by volcanic rock and snow. An hour later, we will arrive at the Meiling Hut at 1900 m which gives us incredible views of the glaciers around it. Before dinner we will practice some techniques of transit in glacier, rescue in cracks and we will have a talk about the plan for the following day. A long day awaits so we will have dinner early and go to sleep.
Early in the morning we will wake up, have breakfast and before we leave, we’ll check the equipment. We will leave the hut with headlights turned on towards the “Piedra Island”. There, we will be roped as we continue on the Castaño Overa Glacier. We will cross the “Filo de la Vieja” during the dawn and continue towards the “Depression” crossing a large field of cracks. In the “Depression” we will check how the group is and if we are all well to face the last effort towards the summit of the Argentine Peak, one of the peaks of Cerro Tronador. Once we cross the Col Reichert we will walk on the edge of the hill until we are below the summit. The last 50 meters are the most technical and steep. You have to be strong and attentive in order for the team to move efficiently. An ice climbing of about 50° takes us finally to the summit of the Argentine Peak at 3185 meters. Time to celebrate with the team!!! The descent is done following the same itinerary of the ascent. After 8 to 12 hours of adventure we will arrive at the hut to rest and enjoy a good beer!
If the energy is enough, during the morning we can practice some ice climbing skills in the cracks near the refuge. After lunch, we will begin the descent to Pampa Linda following the traditional road. Already at the base of the mountain we take the time to appreciate the achievement and enjoy the beauty of the mountains.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
