While most of the country’s via ferrata climbing are centered on the Alps and its various subranges, there are plenty of other options throughout the rest of the country too.

Farther south, in Tuscany, Monte Forato offers an easy one-day via ferrata that is picturesque and perfect for both beginners as well as families.

On the island of mountainous island Sardinia, there are also plenty of other via ferrata options. The via ferrata del Cabirol on Cape Caccia provides simply stunning views out over the sea, while farther inland, via ferrata Giorre provides more great views out over the middle of the island.

One of the best parts of climbing on a via ferrata is that there is no technical know-how required and therefore everyone can do it. From easier routes in some of the country's low-lying valleys and simple ascents up small mountains to tougher challenges on the slopes of Mont Blanc and Vevnica, there is plenty of climbing to suit every skill level.

Since via ferratas tend to be short and quick, you can generally climb one in a day or less. This means that over the course of a trip it is easy and simple to make several ascents. Combine a via ferrata climb with a hiking approach to get the best out of both sports or simply make several consecutive via ferrata ascents over the course of a few days. Many spots are easily reached from the same starting point, luckily enough.

During the summer, northern Italy can get quite hot in the valleys, but become more mild with higher altitudes. Rain is uncommon during this season, though more frequent in the autumn. Sardinia has a Mediterranean climate and is generally warm all year long. The summers can be quite hot with a very strong sun. Rain is not uncommon in the spring.

Most via ferrata trips in Italy will begin with flights into the international airports of either Milan (MXP), Turin (TRN), Venice (VCE) of Geneva (GVA). From here, buses, trains and rental car are all easily accessible and get you to your final destination without too much trouble.
