Join me in this great trek to the Sumaco Volcano (3826 m) in Ecuador and let's hike through a beautiful rainforest! We will see lots of animals and groups of monkeys along the trail.

And on the last day of our program, we will relax in amazing hot springs, after a challenging climb to the Sumaco summit!

I will guide you in this tough 4-day hiking program that requires a very good physical condition! Also, a positive attitude, as we may find rainy conditions.

The Sumaco is a volcano that rises out of the Amazon rainforest. It's located in the Sumaco Galeras National Park, 50 kilometres east of the Andes mountain range. This park represents an 8% of the Ecuadorian Amazon (200.000 hectares).

The volcano lies 100 kilometres at the south-east of the capital Quito and it last erupted between 1865 and 1925. It is surrounded by pristine primary forest. In this area we find from tropical amazon plains, to páramo grasslands and Andean cloud forest.

Besides, the area between the Amazon and the Andes has the richest biodiversity in the world! Most important, this Park holds the highest number of bird species in the world! About 831 species live here.

Along this fantastic trail we might be able to see jaguars, spectacled bears, pumas, mountain and lowland tapirs. Also, several species of monkeys, reptiles and bats amphibians live together in the same area.

Most important, the UNESCO acknowledged the inmense natural and cultural value of the park by declaring it a World Biosphere Reserve.

We will also visit the community of Pacto Sumaco, the only point to access the volcano. In 1998, its residents started an ecotourism enterprise. Their goals are to diversify the sources of income and to promote the sustainable use of the local cultural and natural resources. Besides, they look to protect the biodiversity of the area.

One of the many highlights of this trek will be climbing to the summit of the Sumaco Volcano! We will have the opportunity to look down into the extinct crater. Also, from the top, we will have amazing views of the snow covered peaks of Antisana, Cayambe and Cotopaxi.

Besides, to the south and east, we will get to see the Amazon basin! And we will also be able to see from he distance the activity of the Reventador Volcano.

Then, after our trek, it will be time to relax! We will spend a day at the Termas de Papallacta Spa and Resort. It will be the best reward after the climb! We will even have the opportunity to get a massage!

Itinerary

Day 1: Quito-Pacto Sumaco-El Mirador hut

At 8.00 am we will drive 4.30 hours from Quito to the community of Pacto Sumaco. We will start our hike, over a well maintained log trail for the first hour, then the final 3 hours we will walk through the primary forest over gently rolling hills along a winding trail to the hut at El Mirador (1700 m) near a small river.

Day 2: Monkeys Forest-Guagua Sumaco hut

Today we will start hiking through the Monkeys Forest, loaded with wildlife. After a 4 hours trek, we will get to our destination, Guagua Sumaco Hut (2500 m), located near a lagoon with the same name. We will enjoy great views of Gran Sumaco from here.

Day 3: Pava Yacu Hut

Today we will hike 4 hours to the Pava Yacu Hut (2800 m) through bamboo forests. The hut is located at the base of Sumaco. We will prepare for tomorrow’s climb and turn in for the night.

Day 4: Sumaco Summit

Today we will reach the Sumaco summit. We will hike for an hour through forests, crossing the last creeks to arrive at the end of the tree line. Then, after another 2 to 3 hours we will reach the summit. We will have lunch here and enjoy the amazing view overlooking the Amazon basin. Then hike back to the hut.

Day 5: El Mirador-Guagua Sumaco Lake

We will hike to El Mirador. We will stop for lunch at the Guagua Sumaco Lake. It will take us 5 hours

Day 6: Pacto Sumaco-Papallacta Spa and Resort

Today we will trek for 4 hours to Pacto Sumaco to meet our transportation. We will load our equipment and drive to the Papallacta Spa and Resort to treat ourselves to hot showers and a soak in their thermal pools.

Day 7: Papallacta Spa-Quito

Today we will be able to treat ourserlves to a therapeutic massage in the morning and take a last dip in the thermal pools. Then we will drive back to Quito in the evening.

UIAGM/IFMGA Mountain Guide from Ecuador.

I fell in love with the mountains at a young age while climbing Ecuador’s volcanoes with my father. I guided in the Andes for 8 years and have been guiding for the past four years in the Northwest United States. In 1997 I expanded his adventure skills by taking on rock climbing. I represented Chimborazo province three times as the Ecuadorian National Rock Climbing Champion.

I completed his UIAGM certification with the Bolivian Mountain & Trekking Guide Association, accredited by the National School of Ski and Alpinism of Chamonix (ENSA), and completed Advanced Alpine and Rock Guides Courses with American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA).

I usually spend some months every year in Ecuador (from October to January, but it varies every year). The rest of the year I am based and guide in Europe.
