9-day Ski Touring on Volcanoes in Patagonia, Chile and Argentina

This volcanic ski tour kick offs in Bariloche and takes us to 4-5 of Patagonia's most iconic volcanoes. Over the course of 9 days, we will explore the Casa Blanca, Villarrica, Llaima and Lonquimay volcanoes in Chile. If you choose to add an additional two days on to this tour, we can also visit the Copahue Volcano in Argentina.

This is an exciting yet physically demanding tour that is suitable for fit, advanced skiers and snowboarders only. We will summit all of the volcanoes on our itinerary and descend them on skis (or a snowboard).

Each of the volcanoes on our itinerary has something different to offer us. The Casa Blanca Volcano (1990m), for instance, is conveniently located next to Termas Aguas Calientes. These thermal hot springs near Puyehue, Chile will serve as our base camp for the first two nights. After a long day out in the elements, a dip in the local hot springs pool will be just what you need.

Speaking of hot temperatures, one of the most active volcanoes in all of South America is also on our agenda. This is the claim to fame of the Villarrica Volcano (2840m). Located just outside of Pucón, the "Adventure Capital of Chile", this volcano is a bit temperamental. If the conditions are right for an ascent, however, we absolutely must take advantage of it.

While not as unstable as Villarrica, the Llaima Volcano (3125m) is another of Patagonia's more active volcanoes. As the tallest on our itinerary, the Llaima Volcano will perhaps be the most challenging to summit. Of course, this descent is likely be the most rewarding as well. After arriving back at the base, we will relax and spend the night in a cozy mountain hut. Both the Pehuén and Paraguas Huts will give us an authentic, wintertime mountain experience here at the base of the Llaima Volcano.

Our last volcano on the standard itinerary also has a little something extra in store for us. On the Lonquimay Volcano (2890m), we will have the chance to spend an entire day skiing in the surrounding area. In addition to descending from the summit on skis, we will also ski on the nearby Cráter Navidad (Christmas Crater) and Cerro Cautín. As an optional add-on, you can even jump on a snowmobile and make a few runs in the remote Valle de las Mellizas.

While our standard itinerary does conclude with skiing adventure around the Lonquimay Volcano, you can opt to add on two more days. These additional days will give us time to explore the Copahue Volcano (2297m) back across the border in Argentina. In both cases, the return transfer to Bariloche at the end of the tour is included.
