Description

The Sierra Nevada is a fantastic range for numerous reasons. However, one of the best reasons is how perfect it is for both skiing and mountaineering. As a result, many visitors often combine the two activities when they arrive in this wonderful range. With that said, we are offering a 3 day course that will focus on how to properly and safely backcountry ski/mountaineer.

The trip will be based out of the beautiful Mammoth Lakes area. However the area at our disposal will stretch as far as Bridgeport. Over that distance, there is an abundance of spots in the Sierra Nevada that offer high alpine terrain that is perfect for mountaineering and backcountry skiing.

Some of what we will teach and you will learn includes the following:

How to properly use an ice axe and crampons
Ropework and rappelling
How to use snow anchor
How to ski couloirs and steep terrain,
How to perform crevasse rescue on skis
Proper navigation and route planning,
Snowpack stability evaluation
And much more

Furthermore, you will mainly learn by doing, as you will put into practice what you have just learned within the peaks and terrain of the Sierra Nevada. That includes enjoying descents of up to 1,200 metres!

Participants in this trip should be in very good physical condition as we will be skinning for up to 6 hours a day. It is also necessary that participants can ski at an advanced level with some backcountry experience. However, no climbing experience is required.

The combination of mountaineering and backcountry skiing makes for a thrilling adventure. Price details

Along with the guiding fee, the price also includes avalanche safety equipment, including shovel and transceiver, as well as climbing equipment, including crampons, ice axe and harness. However, the price does not include meals or accommodation.
