Shiretoko National Park in eastern Hokkaido is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled areas of Japan. Join me on this 4-day guided trek and discover this Japanese hidden treasure!
Home to a variety of wildlife, including foxes, deers and brown bears Shiretoko National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. In fact, it is known for having one of the world’s most densely packed brown bear populations. The area is also famous for its flora and fauna, including some endangered and rare species.
The starting point of our trek will be Sapporo, the largest city in the northern island of Hokkaido. From there, we’ll transfer in my big van to Shiretoko. I also strongly recommend you take an extra day to rest and prepare for this challenging trek. During the days to come, I will guide you through the spectacular Shiretoko Cape where every day we’ll walk approximately 10 kilometers and set camp every night in a new location.
Because this is a challenging trek, you will need previous mountaineering experience. It is also essential that you have a good fitness level. Of course, I will be there to help and guide you on the wa.
Are you ready to experience the Shiretoko wilderness? If you are interested, send me a request and get ready to explore the wonders of this Japanese paradise!
If you are looking for more unforgettable experiences in Japan, you can also join me on these backcountry snowboarding trips in Sapporo.
We will transfer from Sapporo to Shiretoko with my van.

We will trek 10 km and it will take us 10 hrs approximately.

We will continue walking 10 more km, that will also take us 10 hrs.

From the tent site we’ll return by boat and it will take us 2 hours.

Mountain Guide
I am a Japan Mountain Guides Association (JMGA) mountain and ski guide, born and raised in Sapporo. I have been an avid traveller all my life, starting as a hitchhiker as a primary school child and travelled around 40 different countries in the world since then, including South America (Aconcagua and Andes), USA (Denali), Greenland etc. I have been involved with the JMGA for about 18 years now, guiding in the mountains both in the summer and in the winter on skis. I am a board member of Hokkaido Mountain Guides Association (HMGA). I also have an experience as a field guide in Antarctica between 2011 and 2013 as a part of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. Since my return from Antarctica, I have been running my own guesthouse and a bar, SappoLodge, which is located at the heart of Sapporo, Hokkaido. It has approximately 30 beds and is always filled with travelers from all over the world. I am happy to be able to guide these diverse and curious visitors in the nature around Hokkaido.
My main field of guiding is in the backcountry all around Hokkaido in the winter. My choice of toy in riding the pow is a snowboard but depending on the type of guests I’m happy riding on my skis too. In the summer, I enjoy guiding in the mountains (climbing and grand traverses), sea-kayaking and canoeing in the river or lake. I full heartedly recommend these fun activities to explore the nature of Hokkaido too!
Get in touch with me if you’d like to enjoy the nature of Hokkaido with me!

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
