Description

The Shiratani-Unsuikyo valley on the island of Yakushima in Japan is a jewel well worth visiting.

I would like to guide you on a day long, group hiking tour through the amazing forest of Shiratani-Unsuikyo. The scenery you will get to see, explore and enjoy is spellbinding. It is vast and gorgeous, and looks like something you would see in a painting, or an animated film. And a big reason for that is because it actually has been used as the basis of one of the most acclaimed animated films of all time, Princess Mononoke.

You will get plenty of time to immerse yourself in the Shiratani-Unsuikyo forest, as we will be hiking for approximately 7 to 8 hours. We will also be hiking at an altitude of approximately 600 to 1,000 metres.

You do not require any previous hiking experience on this trip. You also don’t have to be in exceptional physical condition. However, you should be fit enough to maintain the established pace.

We will be taking different paths during this trekking journey. One of those paths is the Kusukawa path, which was very important during the Edo period. The other path is the Tsuji path, which we will take to reach the beautiful Taiko-Iwa, otherwise known as the drum stone.

This day long trek through the Shiratani-Unsuikyo valley is something you will never forget because the scenery is absolutely stunning. So if you want to join a group and start trekking, all you have to do is send a request. I would be happy to guide you.

There is also a private option of this trip as well, which you can participate in here.

Mountain Guide

I was born in 1977 in Tokyo, Japan. My path into guiding in the nature and in the mountains started when I took one year gap year during my university years and travelled to New Zealand to really explore what I want to do with my life. I found working and living in the nature absolutely wonderful, whilst herding sheep everyday and enjoying the mountain food during and after work. This is where I also found that a lot of people didn’t know much about Japan and I came to realisation that I wanted to share the beauty of Japan with a lot of people!
After graduating university, I discovered and fell in love with Yakushima and was fully convinced that the nature and the lifestyle there, as well as becoming a nature guide there, is what I had been looking for all along. Since then I have based myself in Yakushima and have been guiding there ever since.

I am a JMGA Hiking Stage II certified mountain guide, as well as a member of Japan Canoe Federation, and certified with Technical Rope Rescue license.

I work together with a team of JMGA certified guides here, so it could be me or another certified guide who will guide you.

My joy is to meet and to speak with a lot of people to share the stories around the history and the nature of Yakushima, and also for people to know the Japan that I love. I look forward to meeting you all!!

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
