Come join me on this Puyehue Volcano 2-day guided ascent and discover this Patagonian treasure! This trip is ideal for those who are taking their first steps in mountaineering.

With its enchanted forests, active volcanoes covered in snow and crystal-clear lakes, Patagonia promises a world of adventures. And with 123 active volcanoes, Chile offers one of the most amazing landscapes in the region. During this program, we’ll travel all the way from the northern Argentinean Patagonia to Chile, where the Puyehue Volcano (2,240 m) awaits us.

Located in the Andes Mountains, in the Los Lagos Region, this active volcano is famous for its enormous crater and for being one of the most accesible volcanoes in the country. Once we reach Puyehue’s summit, we’ll be able to observe the crater’s interior and at the same time, marvel at the incredible views of the Andes Mountains. Furthermore, bear in mind that although this program is suitable for beginners and intermediate climbers, it’s important that all participants are physically fit.

Regarding our starting point, our adventure can kick off from San Martin de los Andes or Villa La Angostura. Both of these magical spots are in the Argentine province of Neuquén and from there, we’ll cross over to Chile through the Cardenal Samoré International Pass. Itinerary

Day 1: Meeting point in San Martin de los Andes or Villa La Angostura

Early in the morning we’ll leave from San Martin de los Andes or Villa La Angostura towards the Cardenal Samoré International Pass. Once we cross the Chilean border, we’ll travel a few kilometers until we reach the entrance to the farm where the trail starts.

The trek starts and runs initially in the Valdivian forest. In this amazing forest we’ll discover a charming wooden shelter where we will spend the night under the light of candles.

Day 2: Puyehue Volcano ascent

We’ll wake up really early in the morning, have a delicious breakfast and before dawn we’ll start with the ascent.

At the beginning of the path, we’ll cross through several tall grasslands and then w’ll encounter with rocks and snow that will make it easier to walk.

The ascent will last between 3 to 4 hours until we arrive to the crater. From there, we’ll enjoy amazing views of this crater’s interior.

We’ll descend towards the shelter and from there, we’ll continue descending to our vehicles which will take us back to Argentina.

Lives in San Martín de los Andes (North Patagonia) for 12 years now, but has worked as a mountain guide in the Glacier National Park leading expeditions to the Patagonian Southern Ice Field (22 times) and also to high mountains in Mendoza.

For several winters led groups in the mountains of the Cordillera Real in Bolivia and in the Cordillera Blanca and the Cordillera Huayhuash in Perú.

Now he works during summer guiding ascents to different volcanoes and also guides mountain bike tours. During winters works exclusively on avalanche training.
