Description

The Peña Ubiña-La Mesa Natural Park is a magical land full with valleys and mountains. So let me guide you on this 4 days trek through this place full of beautiful surprises and incomparable views.

The park is located in the asturian territories of Teverga, Quirós and Lena. Because of its ecological importance, Unesco declared it a biosphere reserve. Forests brimming with beech, birch, holly, oak and high mountain flora cover this terrain.

Alongside with the delightful vegetation we’ll encounter, there are many curious residents we might see in our paths. So, we should keep our eyes open in case we spot a deer, wild boar, chamois, roe deer, grouse or an otter. And, if we are really lucky, we might even see a wolf or a brown bear.

The Peña Ubiña Massif lies within the park, in the heart of the Cantabrian Mountains. It is famous because of the 58 peaks of over 2,000 meters that inhabit this land. Within them, the Peña Ubiña (2,411 m) and Peña Rueda (2,155) stand out. Peña Ubiña gives its name to the Massif for its impressive beauty and height. And Peña Rueda has a beautiful limestone pyramid shape, that makes it unique.

Due to its many peaks, the Peña Ubiña Massif, is one of the most interesting places to trek in Europe. Moreover, you will find here a huge range of altitudes in its different zones. And let’s not forget all the creatures and vegetation we’ll see along the way!

Four days might just be enough to unveil all the beauty this place guards. My goal is that you get to see most of this fantastic place. So send me a message, and let’s discover together all the dazzling spots hiding in this wonderful land.

Itinerary

Day 1: Peña Cerreos

We’ll depart from Tuiza de arriba, a charming town at 1,230 meters. Then we’ll head to the Meicin shelter (1.549m). Due to its excellent location, right in the center of the circus formed by the highest peaks in the massif, I’ve chosen this shelter.  After reaching the hut, I will take you to the summit of Peña Cerreos (2,104m). From there, you’ll have fantastic views of Peña Ubiña and it’s a great place to take the best photos. The total distance of this trek will be of 8 kilometers.

Day 2: Peña Ubiña Peak

We will begin our day at the Meicin shelter, from where we’ll head to the Terreros hill. Then, I’ll guide you to the top of the Peña Ubiña peak, another great spot for pictures and mesmerizing views. Today, the walk will be 7 kilometers.

Day 3: Tuiza-Bocaron circular route

Departing from the Meicin shelter, we will go to the town of Tuiza de arriba. There we will begin a wonderful circular route. We’ll pass by a stunning lake in a balcony on Puertos de Agueria. Then, to finish our route we will climb the Bocaron pass, that will take us back to Tuiza. Finally, we’ll arrive to our shelter to spend the night and recover for next day’s adventures. The total trek will be of 16 kilometers

Day 4: Peña Rueda

Finally, we’ll spend our last day trekking through some of the most beautiful parts of the route. We will head to the town of Lindes (930m). Then, I’ll take you to the summit of Peña Rueda (2.155m). After that, we will cross the Puertos de Agueria, to complete anotehr circular route that will take us back to Lindes. By the end of the day we would have walked 15 kilometers.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
