Description

Welcome to an unforgettable Northern Patagonia alpine adventure.

The idea is to ascend the Mount Tronador and do some rock climbing in the Frey valley. This expedition in North Patagonia will last 6 days in total and will be really enriching for people who love outdoor activities.

We will climb Mount Tronador facing a bit of ice climbing and glacier travel. Then, we will spend a few days of multi-pitch climbing in the Frey hut surroundings.

The day-by-day program is displayed at the end of this description. Of course, it can suffer some modifications depending on weather and terrain conditions. If that happens, I will modify the itinerary some days before the date, offering you many other similar options.

Contact me if you want to discuss some items of the program or simply to ask me your doubts before the booking. It will be my pleasure to be your guide through Bariloche, in Northern Patagonia!

Itinerary

Day 1: Bariloche - Pampa Linda - Vivac Hut

I will pick you up at your hostel to leave Bariloche to Pampa Linda. Ride horses to the frontier of Chile (4-hour horse riding). Then, a 3-hour hike to the vivac hut on the South side of Mount Tronador.

Day 2: Mount Tronador summit

We will wake up early to prepare the equipment and head out to Pico Argentino hut (6 hours). This route will take us through a glacier terrain. The final section before the summit is a bit technical, involving a 50º ice slope and some scrambling. Finally, we will be at the top of the Argentine Peak, one of the summits of Mount Tronador. Return down to the Otto Meiling Hut, where we’ll spend the night.

Day 3: Pampa Linda - Bariloche

Descent to Pampa Linda and return to Bariloche. Night in the hostel.

Day 4: Rock climbing in Frey Hut

We will head to the Frey Hut for some rock climbing days. This place is a fantastic spot for rock climbers, surrounded by granite spires and lakes. There are pitches for all levels (tradicional and bolted routes). We will climb in the afternoon and spend the night in tents or in the hut.

Day 5: Rock climbing techniques

Full day of rock climbing. I will give you some tips to improve climbing techniques and safety skills. Night in tents or in the hut.

Day 6: More rock climbing spires

Another full day of rock climbing in different valleys and spires, same base camp. Night in tents or in the hut.

Mountain Guide

UIAGM-IFMGA-IVBV Mountain Guide

My name is Jorge, and I am one of the first IFMGA/UIAGM Certified Mountain Guides in Argentina. I got my full UIAGM-IFMGA certification in 2005. I was one of the pioneer mountain guides in Argentina and Chile to introduce Ski Mountaineering and Backcountry Skiing back in 1999.

In 2009, I became one of the first Argentines to work as a Ski Guide on the Antarctic Peninsula and ski peaks in that area. I helped, co-worked and guided ski athletes from Salomon, Arcteryx, Smith and the North face, such as Xavier de Le Rue, Luca de Bari, Eric Hjorleifson and other pro-athletes of the ski industry in the production of ski films in Argentina and Chile.

I have been guiding across Patagonia for more than 15 years now. In the past few years I have also guided in Antarctica, Norway and Iceland.

Patagonia is my home. This is where I started to develop most of my guiding skills and experiences at an early age. Today, I spend half of the year guiding overseas, and the other half guiding in Argentina and Chile.

Regarding my personal resume as a guide and sportsman, some of the highlights include classic Granite climbs in Yosemite National Park like the Half Dome Regular NW face in a day and Sentinel Rock (Herbert- Chouinard route); several ski mountaineering expeditions to Alaska including the inner Chugach range; the Wrangell's-Saint Elias range, spending two weeks in a tent in the Icefield, skiing couloirs and faces as much as we could. Other great mountaineering expeditions I went on include:
- A remote expedition to Mariano Moreno in the Patagonian Icefield
- Several rock climbs in Europe, like the Dolomites, Slovakia, French and Swiss Alps, and Spain
- Guiding the Mont Blanc ascent on skis
- Technical classic ice/rock Rebuffat- Terray on Pelerins in Chamonix
- Frendo Spur in Chamonix
- Fitz Roy and other satellites spires in Patagonia

I happily spend a lot of my time on skis, and guiding mostly technical backcountry and volcanoes in Patagonia.

I’m fluent in Spanish and English.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
