Description

Dent de Geant and Rochefort Arete are two very classic mountaineering routes in Chamonix. Join for an incredible 2-day trip!

Dent de Geant (4013 m) is a peak in the Mont Blanc massif with a noticeable spear sticking out. The ridge line on the east of this peak is known as Rochefort Arete, and it's one of the most beautiful snow ridges in the Alps.

These climbing routes have a difficulty grade of AD (Alpine grading system), which means they are slightly technical. Because of this, you should have climbing experience at 5c or so, as well as 4 to 5 years of experience in mountaineering on snow mountains.

Furthermore, it's better if you've done some other climbing route in the Alps, like Cosmique Ridge or Pointe Lachenal.

As regards your fitness level, you should be able to move for 10 hours with a 7 kg backpack on snow ridges, including some rocky sections.

There are two options for our itinerary:

Start from Aiguille du Midi, stay overnight at Torino hut and do the route on day 2.
Drive over to Courmayeur, do the route on day 1 and stay overnight at Torino hut after the climb.

This will depend on the conditions and weather. If we were to start from Aiguille du Midi, then we should start very early on day 2, whilst it’s still dark. Then, after summiting, we can descend by Helbronner and go back to Chamonix.

Equipment: mountaineering boots, crampons, ice axe, poles, harness, helmet, belay device, long sling, safety lanyard, screw gate carabiner x2, gloves, hat, insulating clothes, sunglasses, drinks, food / snack, windproof jacket (hardshell / goretex) etc. | I can introduce rental shop if necessary. | You need to cover expenses including the following: guide’s Torino hut cost, Mont Blanc tunnel cost, rental car expense (including petrol) EUR 40, helbronner (lift on Courmayeur side) expense.

Meeting point

Aiguille du midi. At 6 am if driving over to Courmayeur. If taking the Aiguille du midi lift, we'll meet in time for the first lift.

Mountain Guide

I am an IFMGA mountain guide as well as a specialist in mountain rescue. As a guide, I constantly work towards increasing the standards of mountaineering skills in Japan with an emphasis on risk and safety management, whilst training and coaching mountaineering clubs and rescue teams.

I started climbing in my 20s, and since then have enjoyed all-round mountain activities including alpine climbing in Mt Tanigawa (on which I’ve climbed over 360 times), Hodaka, Tsurugi areas as well as rock climbing, ice climbing, ski mountaineering, sawanobori, and high altitude climbing in the Himalayas.
In addition to numerous and notable climbs in Japan, I have an extensive climbing experiences abroad both personal and for guiding; in the Himalayas (Lotse etc.), Eiger, Mont Blanc, Matterhorn, Grands Jorasses north face, and New Zealand (Aspiring, Cook).

My current interest is in training people mountain skills in order for them to enjoy the mountains better and in a safer manner. I run a mountain guide academy where I have been training future mountain guides with a strong focus on safety and elimination of accidents for a number of years. At the same time, I very much enjoy teaching and running skills courses for beginners who are just getting into the mountains but are keen on learning and/ or improving their skills for their next project.
