Description

I invite you to a winter climbing trip to the highest peak in Slovenia: Mount Triglav, at 2864 m.

Inside a beautiful national park in the Julian Alps, Triglav can be climbed all year round. This time, I propose an exciting winter ascent, starting from the Krma valley.

Just below the top of Mt Triglav there's a mountain hut: Triglavski dom. This place is a great destination for ski touring, so this program may be interesting for skiers as well.

Triglav in winter is a technical mountain. The ground is exposed and we'll be climbing snow slopes up to 50°. The climb is done with crampons on our feet and one ice axe.During the winter conditions may change a lot. We usually don't have via ferrata to reach the top of the mountain as we do in other seasons. Maybe in early January, some cable might still be out of the snow, making the climb a bit easier. But it might be covered with snow completely. If you are in an exceptional physical condition (level 5, from 1 to 5), you can climb this peak in just one day. However, 2 days is the recommended length for this trip. Remember that in winter we often have to do more than 2000 vertical meters to get to the top, so to do it in a short winter day you really have to be super fit.

The hut is available during winter (actually it works all year long), although the rooms are not heated.

As regards the necessary gear, at the bottom of this description you can find a list of the recommended equipment you should bring. Please remember that high hiking boots and warm clothing are essential for the winter ascent of Mt Triglav. During the ascent, you will also need to use crampons and ice axe but I will provide them.

You can also check the summer program I offer to the summit of Slovenia. And please contact me if you want to join me for this winter adventure in Mount Triglav. I will be happy to take you there!

Itinerary

Day 1: Journey to Triglavski dom

We can customize this Mount Triglav program to suit your needs and preferences—here’s a sample itinerary:

We'll begin our journey by heading to the Triglavski dom, the mountain hut just below the summit of Mount Triglav.

As we ascend, we'll prepare for the more technical part of the climb, which includes navigating exposed terrain and snow slopes up to 50° steep. Once we arrive at the hut, we'll settle in for the night.

The hut is open year-round, but the rooms are unheated, so be prepared for a chilly evening. We'll rest here, acclimatizing and preparing for the summit push the next day.

Day 2: Summit Mount Triglav

We'll start our climb to the summit of Mount Triglav, using crampons and ice axes to tackle the steep snow-covered slopes. In winter, the route can be more challenging as the via ferrata cables are often buried under the snow, so we'll rely on our technical skills to make the ascent.

Weather conditions can change rapidly, adding to the challenge. After reaching the summit and enjoying the breathtaking views, we'll carefully descend back to Triglavski dom and then make our way down to the valley, completing our winter adventure.

FAQs

When is it the best time to climb Mt Triglav during the winter?

With a winter climb, you must be lucky to get good weather and conditions. It can be perfect, or you can get a meter of fresh snow a day before the climb. So it is hard to say ideal dates. Triglav can get quite crowded in winter over weekends, especially with good weather and conditions. If there are too many people around, you don't get the same feeling as you do if you are almost alone on the mountain. That is the reason why I suggest all my guests do the climb on weekdays.

What happens if the weather gets too bad to climb Triglav safely?

If there is bad weather/conditions making it unsafe to climb Triglav, you'll have 3 options:

  1. We'll postpone the climb to another day with better weather/conditions.
  1. We'll go for an alternative climb.
  1. We cancel and you'll get your money back.

What experience and how fit do I need to be to climb Mt Triglav during the winter?

To enjoy a winter climb, prior experience with an ice axe and crampons is needed. If you never used an ice axe and crampons, it might be too tough. If you do rock climbing and have done a lot of mountains before, you may still enjoy the climb without prior experience. If you have limited mountaineering experience, it might be too tough.

Where are we going to sleep?

The hut we sleep in is half open. There you get warm food and drinks. The dining room is heated, but the rooms are not. If we do the climb on weekdays, we will most likely be alone, meaning we can take mattresses down to the dining room and sleep in a warm place. You don't need to bring a sleeping bag because the refuge we stay in has plenty of blankets.

The full service in the hut (food, drinks, room) is around €70 per person.

I’ll take care of booking the hut.

Can the ascent of Mt. Triglav be done within a single day during winter?

Achieving the ascent of Mt Triglav during the winter in a single day is feasible for those who have very good fitness (rated at level 5 on a scale of 1-5). This option comes with a cost of €500 for an individual and €300 per person for a pair. Nevertheless, I recommend that all participants consider allocating two days for the climb.

What climbing route is selected for the winter ascent of Mt. Triglav?

We will undertake the ascent of Mt. Triglav using the Krma Valley route, just as it is done during the summer.

How many climbers can a guide take with him for the winter ascent of Mt Triglav?

A guide will take 2 climbers maximum during the winter. If you are more, other guides will join.

Is it possible to join a group to climb Mt Triglav during the winter?

Unfortunately, groups are only available for the summer climbs (June-September). You'll find all the details about group tours during the summer here: https://www.explore-share.com/trip/climbing-mount-triglav-2864m/.

From October to May, a guide will take 2 clients maximum with him, for safety reasons.

What’s included in the price? What’s not?

The guiding service, the technical equipment, and the transfer from and to your accommodation are included in the price. You’ll need to pay for the refuge and the food (around €70). Don't forget to take cash with you.

What is the meeting point and time?

On the morning of the initial day, I will pick you up from your location if you are based in Bled, Kranjska Gora, or Mojstrana. The precise timing for the pick-up will be communicated to you one or two days before our departure, depending on the weather conditions.

Can you recommend a place to stay in a location where you'll be able to pick me up?

I recommend you to stay in one of these villages before your Triglav climb: Bled, Kranjska Gora, or Mojstrana.

Here are some suggestions of places to stay in:

In Bled:

  • Garni Hotel Berc
  • Old Bled House
  • Old Parish House

In Kranjska Gora:

  • Spik hotel
  • Julijana Guest House Martin

In Mojstrana:

  • Hostel Lukna

I'll pick you up in the morning and drive you back after the climb.

  • a harness (provided by me)
  • a helmet (provided by me)
  • a via Ferrata kit (based on the conditions, provided by me)
  • a headlamp
  • warm clothes
  • a waterproof jacket and trousers (depending on the weather forecast)

  • mountaineering shoes on which you can fix crampons
  • crampons (provided by me)
  • ice axe (provided by me)

  • a water bottle
  • your medicine prescribed by your doctor
  • a camera
  • energy bars, chocolates, and other food for during the climb.
  • If you have an alpine club membership card, you may be eligible for a sleeping discount. However, if you're not a member, there's no need to be concerned about it.
  • a hut liner is required. If you don't have one, they will charge you a €5 fee for providing sheets.

Do you have any training recommendations before attempting to climb Triglav during the winter?

The most crucial aspect is ensuring you are physically fit. The level of snow on Triglav will determine the extent of experience required with ice axe and crampons. Therefore, focus on achieving a high level of fitness, particularly stamina. While having experience with ice axe and crampons is beneficial, it is not absolutely essential. In summary, prioritize training for overall fitness, with an optional emphasis on practicing with ice axe and crampons if possible.

How do I get to the Triglav area / the starting point? Which airport should I fly into, and what are my transport options?

The closest and most convenient airport is Ljubljana. From there, you can take a direct bus to Bled, which runs regularly. For schedules, you can check here (https://www.ap-ljubljana.si/en/timetable). Alternatively, you can fly into nearby airports, such as Klagenfurt, Trieste, or Venice, though getting to Bled from these locations is more complicated and may require additional transport arrangements.
