Standing at 4,167 meters (13,671ft), Mount Toubkal is the highest peak in Morocco, in northern Africa, and in the whole Arab world. It is located in the country’s southwest, in the High Atlas, a sub-range within the Atlas Mountains, which extend over 2,500 kilometers across Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, in the Maghreb African region. It lays within the Toubkal National Park, which covers over 100,000 hectares between the valleys of N'Fiss to the west and Ourika to the east.
Toubkal is a mountain massif of volcanic origin, and one of the few summits in Morocco covered in snow yearlong. Its surrounding valleys, with terraced crops and adobe constructions, its rich wildlife, and locals’ welcoming and attractive Berber culture, make this trip a must!
Our tour’s meeting point will be the city of Marrakesh airport, located 60 kilometers north from Mount Toubkal. From there, we will travel to our expedition’s starting point, the small village of Imlil (1,740m), in the heart of the Toubkal valley, at the base of the Atlas Mountains. During the journey, we will spend two nights at a hotel in Imlil and one in a mountain refuge.
Our total traveled distance will be of 32 kilometers, with a total ascent of 2,510 meters. I will take groups of a minimum of 6 people and a maximum of 12. While Mount Toubkal is not a technical summit, it features some challenging sections. Therefore, participants are required to be in good shape and have some prior trekking experience to be able to join this expedition.
Below you will find a detailed itinerary of the program. However, please note that this can be slightly adjusted depending on the weather conditions, as well as on availability on hotels and mountain refuges.
Don’t miss this exotic, first-class trek in the heart of the stunning Atlas Mountains! Send me your booking request now.
If you are looking for a longer adventure in Morocco, I also offer an 8-day Toubkal ascent and trekking in the Sahara Desert. In case you are considering other hiking outings, please note I also lead trips in Spain, such as the 5-day program in Ponga Natural Park, the 5-day trek in Picos de Europa National Park, and the Redes Natural Park fall trek in 3 days.
Meeting point
We will meet at Marrakech airport and transfer to the village of Imlil (1,770m), our tour’s starting point. In the evening, we will have dinner at the hotel and go over the trip’s itinerary.
After breakfast at the hotel, we will begin hiking along mule trails, across the village of Armed (1,850m), to Marabout Sidi Chamharouch (2,350m), a pilgrimage site, where we will enjoy a delicious meal prepared by our cook. We will stop at Imi n’Tifrite to have a traditional tea, and then cross the Isgan n’Wagouts corrals reaching the Neltner refuge (3,207m), built and run by the French Alpine Club, where we will spend the night.
Distance: 12km
Ramp: ↑ 1,325m ↓ 94m
Early in the morning, we will begin our ascent to Mount Toubkal (4,167m), to ensure safe weather conditions. First, we will head to the hole of Akhbi n’Tizi (3,700m) and trek to the Collado del Toubkal (3,950m), from where we will ascend the summit, via the Toubkal Ridge. If the weather helps, from Toubkal’s top, we will enjoy impressive views to the Atlas Mountains. We will then descend to the refuge and return to Imlil, where we will spend the night.
Distance: 20km
Ramp: ↑ 1,185m ↓ 2,416m
We will have breakfast in Imlil and transfer to the hotel or airport in Marrakesh. Farewell and end of trip.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
