Description

Join me for 7 days of ski touring in Lapland, one of the northernmost destinations in Europe.

Lapland is a fascinating and wild region that extends along the northern parts of several countries: Norway, Finland, Sweden and Russia.

During this trip we’ll explore some of the best ski spots in the Norwegian Lapland.

Being at the cost of North Norway during the second half of April is probably one of the best places to be as a backcountry skier.

This trip combines spectacular ski touring at the Lyngen Peninsula with touring in the inland.

We’ll also find good snow in Tamokdalen, a very popular area among Nordic freeriders. Here, there are skiable birch forests and even an unofficial world championship of “tree-riding”. The rules are simple: the start is in the timber line and the first one to get down to the valley wins!

Besides, we’ll go to the border area between Norway, Finland and Sweden. This will bring a touch of Lapland mystique to the tour! In fact, the program includes a snowmobile-assisted ski touring from Finland to Sweden.

During the rest of the week, we’ll move flexibly according to the weather conditions, so we can make the best of our trip!

It’s important to point out that this program is designed for skiers that already have some ski touring experience. However, you don’t need to be an expert. Essentially, you need to be able to ski in slopes with 35 degrees of inclination. Furthermore, you should be in a good physical condition. There will be five-hour climbs and the total touring time per day will be of eight hours in a moderate pace.

Please, feel free to ask me any questions about this trip and contact me if you want to join me! I’ll be happy to be your guide for a week of ski touring in such an amazing destination.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

Arrive in Tromso. We meet at Tromso airport and continue (1:30 hours) to our accommodation.

The “Black House”, a block hut, was built by a Finnish family at the beginning of 20th century and it is situated directly by the coastline of Lyngen fjord. Due to its location it has become a legendary base for Finnish freeriders.

With its traditional sauna at the sea side, it is a excellent base camp for our tour.

There we’ll discuss the program of the week, have dinner and may have the first sauna session of the week.

Day 2 to 6: Ski touring days

We’ll do day trips from our base. Since there is daylight practically around the clock, our daily schedule can vary.Sometimes we’ll do an early “alpine start”, sometimes we’ll use the better conditions later in the day and start in the the afternoon. We want to exploit the special arctic spring conditions the best way possible and this often requires a time-flexible daily planning – but also allows exceptional ski experiences! We’ll usually have breakfast and dinner in our reindeer herders hut and we will make day trips of about 1000-1500 m.This means up to about 5 hours of climbing and 8 hours total touring time per day.

Day 7: Return

We eat breakfast at our cabin and go back to Tromso Airport.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
