Description

Come along on a 6-day hiking adventure in the Kitzbühel Alps. The Kitzbühel Alps Trail (KAT walk) is an epic 106 kilometre trail that can be split into six sections. We’ll make our way through those sections over the course of our trip.

The Kitzbühel Alps is a popular skiing area in the winter with typically beautiful Austrian scenery. The walks that we’ll tackle over our 6 days have different levels of difficulty. We’ll also see varied sights along the way, from mountain pines and forestry to farmland and local industries.

Our first day will begin gently. We’ll hike through beautiful lush forests, meadows and picturesque farmsteads which are common in the region.

As the days go on, the inclines will become steeper and by day two we will have already reached the highest point of the trip, Lodron Mountain. Here we’ll get some pretty epic views.

On day five we’ll get to experience the world-famous “Streif” downhill ski course. Then, throughout the rest of the trip, we’ll continue our hikes and continue to enjoy world-class alpine scenery.

Some of the hikes on this trip are strenuous, so you’ll need stamina and quite a high level of fitness.

Book now and join us in the spectacular Kitzbühel Alps for the trip of a lifetime.

If you’re interested in exploring more of Austria, you should definitely check out this guided ascent of Wildspitze, the highest mountain in North Tyrol.

Itinerary

Day 1: Hopfgarten – Kelchsau

On day one we’ll walk for around five hours and cover roughly 17 kilometres. We’ll begin by walking through meadows and farmland of Penningberg before reaching Innerpenningberg. The incline will increase here as we hike towards Haagalm. Once we reach Haagalm, we’ll be able to enjoy a gentle walk with just a few simple hills before arriving at Höhenbrandalm. There we’ll take a forest road down hill to Kelchsau.

Day 2: Kelchsau – Windautal Valley

On day two we’ll be walking for a bit longer- around 6 hours. The paths that we’ll follow are intermediate level and we’ll get to take beautiful forest roads and alpine huts as we walk. This hike is strenuous, we’re going to gain 1,200 metres of elevation and we’ll reach the highest point on the KAT walk, the Lodron Mountain. If we are lucky with the weather then we should get beautiful 360 views of the Kitzbühel Alps from here.

Day 3: Windautal Valley – Aschau

The trails for day three are not that difficult but we will be covering 19 km which is not an easy feat.

Day 4: Aschau – Kitzbühel

On day four we’ll trek up to Schwarzkogelscharte Notch, taking in the views of beautiful alpine pastures along the way. We’ll then follow the ridgeline passing the ski resort Kitzbühel till we reach Hahnenkamm Mountain. From there we’ll descend back to Kitzbühel via the “Streif” racecourse. Along the way we’ll pass signs which provide some history and facts about the course, which is considered to be one of the most challenging downhill slopes in the world.

Day 5: Kitzbühel – St. Johann in Tirol

On this day we’ll cross Kitzbüheler Horn Peak to St. Johann. This will be a challenging hike.  If it’s too much we can cut miles by taking a scenic gondola ride. The views from the top will make all your effort worth it though. From the top you’ll be able to enjoy 360 alpine views. To get back we’ll take a beautiful route down from the Kitzbüheler Horn Peak until we arrive at Harschbichl.

Day 6: St. Johann in Tirol – Fieberbrunn

On our last day, we’ll take on a secluded upland plateau. This day of walking will be relatively easy, but we’ll walk through diverse scenery. From dry alpine pastures to karst formations. We’ll also get great views of lush forests and untouched landscapes.

Man

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Maxine

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
