Description

This 8-day guided hiking tour of Karpathos, Greece, is unique for the Greek Islands, as the hordes of tourists and overcrowded beaches are few and far between here, leaving us to explore the raw natural scenery of this beautiful place, ranging from sheer cliff faces and rocky outcrops on the coast, to vast tracts of dense rainforest, spectacular mountains and an immense array of flora and fauna in the interior.

Karpathos is a sparsely populated Greek Island located in the Southeastern Aegean Sea, and due to its relative remoteness and isolation it has developed and retained a unique culture of dress, customs and dialect that is distinctive and different to the rest of Greece.

We meet in Karpathos on day 1, and on day 2 we begin our exploring in earnest with a hike up to the traditional village of Olympos via lovely and vast valleys and lush green forests.

Day 3 is a highlight for many, as we gently walk through exquisite pine tress, olive groves and wheat fields to the pretty and alluring Papa Mina beach, where we refresh and relax with a swim in its crystal clear waters.

The subsequent 3 days contain yet more tremendously spectacular hiking, as we stumble upon ruins more than 3500 years old, and also spend a whole day traipsing and travailing around the uninhabited island of Saria, with ancient ruins, monuments and settlements dotting the landscape, and masses of native local flora and fauna covering the island.

The penultimate day is a free day allowing you to indulge in whatever pursuit you wish, and we finish up on day 8 having explored every nook and crannie that Karpathos has to offer.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival to Karpathos Airport & Transfer to Diafani

Upon arrival to Karpathos airport, transfer to the charming sea front village of Diafani.

We settle to our rooms and enjoy a welcome dinner.

Day 2: Hike to Olympos & Climb up to the summit of Profitis Ilias

Olympos is a village of exceptional beauty, and the capital of northern Karpathos.

We cross traditional villages, beautiful green valleys and verdant cliffs until we reach the beautiful settlement on the slopes of a mountain.

Houses in Olympos are built amidst lush green forests and preserve their traditional colour and layout. The village itself is a live museum with an idyllic atmosphere.

Today, the village has a population of 400 inhabitants most of whom are engaged in farming and agriculture. Olympos retains an old fashioned way of life where primitive customs play an important role. Having reached Olympos we climb to Profitis Ilias peak at an altitude of 718 metres, to admire the magnificent view of the Aegean sea. We then descend to Olympos where we have time to enjoy our lunch and explore the village.

Depending on our will, we can either hike down to Diafani via Ag.Konstantinos or transfer back to Diafani.

Day 3: Hike Papa Minas Beach (Circular Route)

A lovely walk up and down some gentle slopes, through pine trees and past olive groves and wheat fields to the pretty bay of Papa Mina with its pebble beach and shady Tamarisk trees. We have time to enjoy swimming and snorkelling in this beautiful bay before we return back to Diafani.

Day 4: Hike to Ancient Vroukounta from Avlona and then to Vananta Bay and Diafani

Short transfer to Avlona from where we hike on a stone path built in ancient times, descending to Ancient Vroukounta.

Vroukounta is a mystical area where once stood the ancient city state of Vrykous.

We discover ruins of more than 3500 years old, the Church cave of St. John and underwater treasures while snorkelling. We then hike up and back to the village of Avlona for a delicious homemade lunch to the one and only tavern in the area – famous all over Karpathos.

After a while we descend to Vananta by a stone path that goes easily towards this lovely bay. From there, the last part of the hike is situated just on the coast offering incomparable views.

Day 5: Hike to Tristomo & Steno

Again from Avlona, following a cobbled road we reach Tristomo an almost deserted village – where one last family refuses to abandon its hometown – and a natural harbor set in a protected bay on the north-west coast with spectacular views.

After our picnic lunch we continue to Ag.Aikaterini and Steno – the spot where we can almost “touch” the nearby island of Saria. A traditional fishing boat takes us back to Diafani.

Day 6: Explore Uninhabited Saria

With a boat we cross to Saria Island, where we make a traverse hike of the island ending at the beach of Palatia where we enjoy a barbeque lunch and take the boat back to Diafani.

In antiquity Saria used to be one of the four cities of Karpathos, until it detached from it through erosion, becoming in later times a base for Saracen pirates.

We can see ancient monuments, ruins and remains of ancient settlements nearly everywhere.

According to mythology, the island was created when Poseidon in a battle with Titan Ephialtes, he cut off a piece from Karpathos side and buried under this opponent.

Ruins of the city are sunken in the Strait of Tristomou, between Karpathos and Saria. Signs indicate the existence of Apollo Porthmiou sanctuary.

There are traces of human presence since the Neolithic Age and the early Bronze Age, and since historical times have been found remains of fortifications on the West side of Castello hill.

Furthermore, the island is an important habitat and breeding site for birds and marine species. Note that the northern Karpathos, Saria, and the sea area around them, belongs to the European network of protected areas Natura 2000, thanks to the variety of habitats available and rare plant and animal species that host.

Day 7: Free Day

(Optional hiking or cooking class, etc).

Day 8: End of Journey

Transfer to Karpathos Airport.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
