Description
Located on the north-western rim of the Öræfajökull volcano, Hvannadalshnúkur is the highest peak in Iceland (2,100 meters). Join us on this group hiking quest to reach its summit!
This exciting hike to the top of Hvannadalshnúkur consists of a full day (about 15 hours) trek. You’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Vatnajökull glacier and vast sandy plains.
Hiking this peak is a once in a lifetime experience and we will be happy to guide you on this challenging experience. You won’t need any technical climbing skills, although you do need to be in very good physical condition!
Please note that this expedition can only be done from April to June, as later in the season the last part becomes a steep maze of crevasses that we are not able to cross with an acceptable margin of safety. Also, take into account that we can only take from 2 to 6 people on this ascent.
Apart from the guiding fee, the price includes the ice gear and safety equipment. You only have to bring warm clothing, rain gear, hiking boots, lunch and drinks. And lots of energy!

What you need to bring with you: Boots and Clothing:
- Hiking Boots – Waterproof with good ankle support.
- Gaiters.
- Long sleeve shirt (thermal underwear) – Wool or synthetic.
- Long Johns (early season – April / beginning of May).
- Light sweater, wool or fleece (2nd layer).
- Warm Jacket – Wool or fleece (3rd layer).
- Pants – light and fast drying – e.g. soft-shell.
- Jacket with a good hood – Waterproof and breathable.
- Rain pants – Waterproof and breathable material.
- Gloves – 2 pairs - different thickness.
- Mittens – insulated (early season climbs / April beginning of May).
- Socks – Wool or synthetic.
- Warm hat– Wool or synthetic.
- Puffy jacket – down or fibre.
Other gear:
- Backpack – 30-40 litres.
- Sunglasses – rated for glacier travel.
- Sun protection / face and lips. High SPF 30 or more.
- Camera.
- Headlamp (at times of year when it gets dark).
Optional gear:
- Walking Pole(s).
- Sun/rain Hat or a Baseball cap for sun protection.
- Ski-goggles for ascents to the end of April.
