Description

Walking through one of the classic trekking on the north Patagonia is a unique, amazing opportunity to explore this incredible alpine wonder. Join me on this hut to hut adventure where each day will surprise us with a different point landscape and some challenges to skip, making of this trip one to remember!

Our journey begins at Catedral ski resort, where we'll immerse ourselves in the beauty of the Lenga forest before ascending to Refugio Frey. Enjoy breathtaking views and explore the area's alpine terrain.

Get ready to then climb to Catedral Ridge, followed by a descent to Rucaco Valley and onward to Refugio Jakob, on a pristine lagoon.

The final day promises to be the most demanding, as we conquer the challenging ridges leading to Refugio Laguna Negra.

We also have an additional fourth day for rest, exploration, or summit attempts based on weather and group preferences.

Do note that this expedition requires intermediate to advanced mountaineering skills, including navigating up to 35-degree snow slopes and scrambling terrain. Participants should be physically fit and capable of carrying a 15kg load (although personal porters are available).

Itinerary

Day 1: Villa Catedral to Refugio Frey (Frey Hut), 3-4hrs / 5km

We’ll start the trek at the Catedral ski resort and walk through a beautiful native Lenga forest. After arriving at the hut (Refugio Frey) we’ll take a rest and then have lots of opportunity to explore the area and the incredible views of surrounding peaks. Refugio Frey is a well known alpine climbing area and you’ll know why when you see the many granite spires here.

Day 2: Refugio Frey to Refugio Jakob, 5-6 hrs / 9.5km

Day two begins with a hike up Catedral ridge, and from there we head back down into scenic Rucaco Valley. Crossing this valley takes us to Brecha Negra ridge and then on to Refugio Jakob where we’ll spend the night. This hut is located on the shoreline of the lagoon and is a great spot to enjoy the rest of the afternoon!

Day 3: Refugio Jakob to Refugio Laguna Negra, 8-10hrs / 9km

This is the most challenging day of the traverse, as we climb the ridges of the upper mountain. The views however are spectacular, making the effort well worth it. Later in the day we arrive at Refugio Laguna Negra for our last night of the traverse.

Day 4: Refugio Laguna Negra to Arroyo Lopes, 5-6hrs / 9km

From Refugio Laguna Negra we hike to beautiful Cerro Lopez, a high pass that drops down to arroyo Lopez and then the road back to Bariloche.

Day 5: Extra Day in case of bad weather

This is a back-up/optional day in case we encounter bad weather or want to take an extra day at Refugio Jakob to further explore the area and enjoy a more relaxed pace on the traverse.

Mountain Guide

I was born in a very remote area of northern Argentina which gave me a special appreciation for the outdoors. When I was 16 my family moved south, closer to the mountains, and I started to climb in the Andes. I've been mountaineering – trekking and climbing – ever since.
I've traveled and climbed throughout Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, the USA, Canada and Europe. I spent two summer seasons working in Aosta, Italy where I completed numerous ascents and climbing on the area.
At some point in my younger years, my career path steered me to the telecommunications industry, scaling towers and fixing cellular systems. But the mountains were never far away and I eventually returned to my roots and become a mountain guide since 2001.
In the winter I focus on being a ski guide around the mountain range and also the volcanoes, this is how I spend part of my time on the winter seasons as well as teaching backcountry ski and avalanche awareness courses.

What people are saying about Explore-Share

Man

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Maxine

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Valeriya

Joshua

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Cami

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
