I want to guide you on an unforgettable 8-day ski touring and splitboarding trip in Hokkaido, Japan.

There is nothing quite like ski touring and splitboarding in Hokkaido, Japan. You will get to enjoy some of the deepest and freshest powder in the world, while also experiencing Japanese culture. All this will make this trip a win-win tug of war between an amazing cultural experience and fantastic skiing.

The climate in Hokkaido is perfect for skiing because it is cold most of the year, which produces the kind of snow skiers dream of. During your skiing adventures you will get to ski up the flanks of the cone-shaped Yotei-San volcano, as well as skiing off-piste in Niseko and Sapporo Kokusai. Finally, you will get to ski tour and splitboard in Furano-dake, which is one of the most famous skiing spots in Japan.

Aside from the skiing and the scenery, you will also enjoy beautiful, comfortable natural hot springs. You will have the chance of warming up in different bath houses and enjoy local cuisine. The guest houses where you will be spending the nights will also offer a taste of Hokkaido's culture, from the slippers and paper walls to the futon beds and Yukata robes.

Itinerary

Day 1 to 3: Arrival in Sapporo/Chitose Airport - Ski Touring

After you arrive, you will take a 3-4 hour transfer to Niseko, where you will spend the night. We will ski touring the south part of Hokkaido Island. We will be spending three nights at the same lodge to maximize our skiing days. On day three we will move to the seaside city of Otaru on our way north.

Day 4: Arrival in the Asahikawa/ Furano area

We will get the transfer to the north with some good touring along the way.

Day 5 to 7: Ski in Northern and Central Hokkaido

We will stay here for three nights. We have the option to ski Asahidake, the highest peak on Hokkaido Island at 2290m. On the night of day 7, we will move one last time to a downtown hotel in Asahikawa to celebrate our tour and spend the last night!

Day 8: Transfer to Asahikawa

Transfer to Asahikawa airport, flight back to the main island and on to new adventures.

Equipment: waterproof jacket, waterproof pants, down or fiber jacket, backpack (25-35L) with ski attachments, socks, base layer, fleece mid layer, ski pants, gloves, hat, neck gaitor, buff and or face mask, water container and thermos, personal medications and blister kit, ski goggles, sunglasses, sun and lip cream, camera, ski touring or telemark boots, skis with touring or telemark bindings or splitboard, ski poles, skins, shovel, probe, avalanche transceiver, winter boots, swimsuits, towel for onsen.

Mountain Guide

I'm Iceland's first and only IFMGA internationally certified mountain guide. I'm a member of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides ACMG with whom I finished my certification. I have climbed and skied extensively all over the world, and I lived and worked in both the European Alps and the mountains of Western Canada.
I have brought this wealth of diverse experiences to Iceland and the Arctic North where I have to my name over a hundred first ascents and descents in Iceland and Greenland.
My love of the mountains grew from an early age working as a shepherd on my grandparent's farm on the Troll Peninsula in Northern Iceland. Or maybe it had something to do with my name, which in English would translate directly to Glacier Mountain man.
