Description

The Tour du Mont Blanc is one of the most popular hiking adventures worldwide. It covers 166 km, traveling through 3 countries, and comprising 10,000 m of ascent and descent.

Standing on the border of France, Switzerland and Italy, Mont Blanc is one of the highest mountains in Europe. At 4810 meters, this summit is surrounded by numerous glacier valleys.

During this trip, we’ll travel through conifer forests, rugged cols and high alpine grasslands. We will also walk amidst some of the Alps’ typical flowers, and we might even get to see some animals, like chamois, ibex and marmots. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy an incredible setting doing what you like most: hiking!

Apart from the famous Mont Blanc, we’ll enjoy stunning views of many other peaks. For instance, Mont Dolent, Dômes de Miage, Grandes Jorasses, Aiguille du Chardonnet, Aiguille Verte, Grand Combin and Aiguille Verte, among others.

It’s a relatively strenuous trekking, but we’ll follow good quality trails all the way around. We’ll take it slow and steady so that we can enjoy the walk and the gorgeous scenery. I recommend this trip for people who hike regularly and have a good fitness level.

Join me on this 5-day hiking program and discover this classic for yourself. I’ll be glad to guide on such an amazing adventure!

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Chamonix

The trip begins in Chamonix, with an evening meal and trek briefing.

Day 2: Lac Blanc walk and overnight in Les Contamines (good weather option)

We take a bus to Tré-le-Champ, on the way up the Col des Montets.

From here, we walk to the Lac Blanc, up a series of ladders (do not worry, they are easy to negotiate and are quite short), in the heart of the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve.

This walk is mainly uphill, but don’t be alarmed as you will see some of the best scenery that Chamonix has to offer, including the Lacs des Chéserys.

We have lunch at the Lac Blanc.

After lunch we walk for almost an hour to the Flegère cable car, which we take down to the Chamonix valley.

From here, our taxi will take us to Les Contamines, where we’ll spend the night.

In case of bad weather, we will walk to Les Contamines instead of doing the Lac Blanc.

Day 3: Les Contamines to Les Chapieux

Today we trek up the old Roman road to the chapel at Notre Dame de la Gorge. From here it’s uphill, past the Chalet de Barme (if we’re doing well for time, it’s a perfect coffee stop!) and up to the Col de Bonhomme (2328m) for a well-earned lunch stop. We then have a gentle climb to the Col de la Croix de Bonhomme (2478m), from where we have a great view towards the Vanoise National Park. After that, we have a 2-hour walk down to Les Chapieux, and stay in a lovely chambre d’hôte, a guest house with dinner included.

Day 4: Les Chapieux to Courmayeur

We walk up the road for an hour to reach the Refuge des Mottets, from where we start the climb up to the Col de la Seigne (2516m).

Here the scenery really changes, we are in Italy!

We have fantastic views down into the Val Veny and over to the Val Ferret, and you start to see the other side of Mont Blanc and the other Chamonix
giants.

A descent past the Elisabetta hut (first Italian coffee of the trip!) takes us to La Visaille, where we take a bus down to Courmayeur.

We may stay in Courmayeur itself, or if we’re staying in the Val Ferret, we can spend a bit of time exploring Courmayeur before we take the bus to our hotel.

Day 5: Courmayeur to La Fouly then taxi to Champex

We take a bus to the end of the Val Ferret (Arnuva) and start the walk up the Grand Col Ferret (one of the highest cols on the trip at 2530m). We are rewarded with stunning views of the Grandes Jorasses, the Grand Combin and the Mont Dolent (whose summit is in the border of France, Switzerland and Italy).

At the top of the col we cross over into Switzerland, where the scenery changes yet again.

We continue to La Fouly, an alpine village with traditional Swiss “chocolate box” chalets. From here we take a taxi to Champex.

Day 6: Champex to Col de la Forclaz

Today is a long but rewarding day. We take the Bovine route to the Col de la Forclaz. Then transfer from Forclaz to Chamonix.

Day 7: Depart Chamonix

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
