Description

Join me on this wonderful 6-day hiking trip and discover the great diversity of landscapes around the Hautes Alpes!

I propose 6 hikes (7 nights) in very different massifs, from Provence to the Alps. During these days, we will discover beautiful peaks, lakes and rivers, shepherd's refuges, traditional dairies, heritage places, and so much more!

From the central location of Gap, the most important town in the Gapençais region, I propose loop hikes for each day, instead of a round hiking trip. This way, you can get the chance to explore a greater diversity of landscapes in the Southern French Alps, like the following:

  • Provence, with its beautiful peaks and gorges

  • The French Dolomites (Dévoluy Massif), with its chorums (huge holes created by  water), and its lunar landscapes

  • The Hautes-Alpes, with their lakes, waterfalls, emblematic peaks with still wild and preserved mountains, part of the great Ecrins National Park.

You can check a sample day-by-day itinerary at the bottom of this text.

However, I make a suggestion, but we can decide our itinerary together! You can choose between a more alpine oriented program, or an itinerary more oriented to the pleasant life in Provence. I adapt the program to better suit the desires of everyone in the group.

For our daily hiking tour, you just need to take a small pack for the day. I take groups of at least 2 people to a maximum of 12. Please note in July and August the minimum group size is 4. The program runs from Saturday to Saturday.

Also, I can help you to find a nice and comfortable accommodation in Gap!

So send me a request if you want to join me on this great hiking tour around the Hautes Alpes! Then we will start planning your next hiking trip in this beautiful region in France.

I also offer a 7-day guided snowshoeing tour around the Hautes Alpes.

Itinerary

Day 1: Hiking to the Pic de Gleize summit (2161 m)

The goal is to reach the “well-known peak of the Gapençais”, the Pic de Gleize, enjoying a tour around the mountain. This allows us to start from a hillside on which we may come across chamois or mouflons. We will continue our ascent to the pass where we will have a picnic. Then, we will follow the ridge line until we reach the summit at 2161 meters. We enjoy the beautiful view of the Champsaur and the mythical Bure peak before we start a gentle descent by the southern ridge while we get a wonderful view of Gap and its different valleys.
On the way back (Napoleon road), we stop at the dairy to taste delicious
cheese!
Total height difference: 600m.
Total time: 4h30 approx

Day 2: Provence-Durance Valley

In Provence, after hiking up through beautiful oaks, we cross a cave. The first part of the cave has 2 windows offering a nice view on the Durance Valley. When we leave the cave we will get to the ridge by some steep passages. We will have a picnic at the summit (1147m) enjoying a nice view on the citadel of Sisteron. We will go down north by a forest track. There is must-stop passage at the “old Sisteron and its water” to quench thirst.
Difference in altitude: 680m.
Duration: 4h30 approx.

Day 3: Hiking ascent-View of Serre-Ponçon Lake

On the way to “the sharp peak which overlooks the Serre-Ponçon Lake” we enjoy a hiking ascent through a larch forest. We may come across some deer! Then  we get to the ridge with a great view of the lake. The ridge ascends with a passage that takes us to the summit at 2349m. The 360 ° view is spectacular Then we go down for a picnic at the col. For the descent, we will go around the Oucanes (geological curiosities) and we may meet a shepherd near his cabin. On the way back, we can visit the largest dam in Europe. Difference in altitude: 981m. Duration: 6h30 approx.

Day 4: Provence-Gorges-Provençal Baronies Regional Natural

We will go to Provence to visit beautiful gorges. This is a great tour in a Mediterranean landscape. We can bathe in emerald green water, with some natural jacuzzis! The site is Natura 2000 and it is part of The Provençal Baronies Regional Natural Park. On the way back, we will visit the bees museum and taste very good honey! Difference in altitude: 570m. Distance: 12 km  Duration: 5h30 approx

Day 5: Hiking to a French Dolomites Pass (2240 m)

Today we head towards a pass in the French Dolomites. We will go up to a shepherd’s hut, where we can meet some shepherds. Our hike will continue along a first valley which is superb. Hopefully, we may be able to see a chamois, before arriving at the pass at 2240m, with splendid view on the Trièves. Once there, we will enjoy a picnic, before walking along the pass to discover old carcasses from 50 years ago! Then we will go back to another valley,  and we will reach the shepherd’s hut. Elevation: 1100m. Duration: 7h (it can be shortened according to your wishes).

Day 6: Ecrins National Park

Today we will hike north towards the Ecrins National Park and its wild and preserved nature. It’s located in the picturesque little valley of Champoleon. It’s a very pleasant hike, where we may meet an Ibex, depending on the season. We will pass the bottom of valley, with an amazing high mountain landscape view, in a beautiful scenery. A cozy hut will welcome us for the lunch break.
On the way back, we will stop at “the shepherd’s house” and in a cheese factory which offers many great local products.
Difference in altitude: 750m.
Highest point: 2050m.
Duration: 5h approx

Mountain Leader

My love for the mountains, which provide me a sense of freedom, led me to leave my home town to settle in the Hautes Alpes. Born in 1967, I am married and the father of 3 girls.

I hold a Sports Educator Certificate since 1999, a State Mountaineering Diploma and a Mountain Leader Certificate since 2000. I’m also a Mountain Rescuer since 2001.

I have been practicing mountain activities for many years and this experience allows me to guide you in a mountain environment in complete safety. I think of myself as a mountain artisan and believe that adapting and customizing each outing according to the group and their desires is key to providing a great experience.

My passion for the mountains and my experience as a teacher help me share my knowledge with you in a way that will allow you to take full advantage of the experience. Nature takes us back to basics and time spent in nature is fundamental in this high-tech world.

My job allows me to get to know people from very different backgrounds. I find this very enriching and I do my best to adapt to each one of them. I also love that my profession allows me to exercise and be in contact with nature. This is key to my well-being!

The Southern Alps are my favorite place in the world and I have been exploring them for many years. I enjoy their diversity — from the Provence to the 4-thousanders, and from its lakes to its cliffs and glaciers. The mild Mediterranean weather is the cherry on the cake!

What people are saying about Explore-Share

Man

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Maxine

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
