Description

Are you looking for a unique ski touring expedition in the Alps? Then join me for a 8-day trip and discover the fabulous Haute Route!

The Haute Route is probably the most famous ski touring route in the world. It connects Chamonix, home of Mont Blanc (France) with Zermatt, home of the Matterhorn (Switzerland). First charted as a summer mountaineering route in the mid-19th century, nowadays it is very popular among winter sport adventurers.

On this 8-day trip (6-day expedition) we will cross huge glaciers and ski on top-quality snow. Furthermore, we will enjoy awesome views of the Alps. In the evenings, we will spend the night in traditional huts along the way. You an check the complete itinerary below!

This trip is only suitable for expert off-piste skiers. A good fitness level is also necessary. Previous mountaineering experience is not a requirement but definitely an advantage!

Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome

Meeting point at 5pm in the Hotel. Welcome briefing, gear check, and distribution of safety equipment.

Day 2: Argentiere

First, we will ascend to the Grands Montets glacier in Argentiere on one of the cable cars. Then, on the high glacier we will go over the essentials: how to put on crampons, use an ice exe and arrest a fall. After, we will ski down to the Argentiere glacier and put on our skins to climb towards the Refuge d’Argentière hut (2769 m).

Day 3: Champex - Verbier

Through the Col du Chardonnet (3323m) we will descend to the village of Champex. There we will ascend approximately 5 hours and ski down about 1700m. A taxi will take us to the village of Verbier.

Day 4: Col de la Chaux

With the Verbier lifts we will arrive to Col de la Chaux. From there we head up to Col de Momin and the Rosablanche. If the weather is nice we will catch a magnificent view of the Mont Blanc. Later we will descend to the Cabane de Prafleuri hut  (2935 m), where we will spend the night.

Day 5: Col des Roux

We will start the day heading up from the hut to the Col des Roux. Overnight in Cabane de Dix hut (2928 m).

Day 6: Pigne de Arolla - Glacier de Piec

At the the summit of Pigne de Arolla (3798 m) we will reach the highest point of our journey. The night will be spent at the famous Cabane des Vignettes hut (3157 m), perched on a rock face above the Glacier de Piece.

Day 7: Zermatt

We will ascend about 1100 meters through three cols: Col de L’Eveque (3392 m), Col de Mont Brule (3210 m) and Col de Valpelline (3568 m). From there we ski down 1800 meters to the town of Zermatt. Return to Chamonix.

Day 8: End of the trip

Breakfast and end of the adventure.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area.
