Description

I invite you to join me on a historical trek, a timeless journey through a place of amazing natural beauty and unique landscapes, which were the setting of Malga Zures, one of the most historically significant places of the World War I in the Trentino-Adige region, in northern Italy.

It is here where the Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies faced each other a few hundred meters away. To reach our destination on this half-day trek, we will hike along the Austro-Hungarian front line, where former military posts now offer stunning views of Lake Garda.

The enchanting village of Nago in the northern region of Trentino-Alto Adige will be the starting point for our hike. From Nago, we can enjoy beautiful views of the north shore of Lake Garda.

This half-day hike takes us along part of the Peace Trail, an alpine hiking trail that covers over 520 kilometers, following many former military trails along the line of  the Italian-Austrian front during the First World War.

After crossing the historic center of Nago we head towards the vineyards surrounding it. Accompanied by the lake breezes, we gradually walk along the historical trail nº 601. We will visit the galleries, the barracks, the gun emplacements and the trenches which formed the Austro-Hungarian defensive line.

Then we reach Malga Zures, today a place fullo of sun, but which hosted one of the bloodiest battles in the area during the First World War, in 1915. It is possible to visit the small military cemetery nearby, which remained as a witness of the bloody battles.

Malga Zures was one of the most important places for the Austrian defensive line in the Alto Garda sector. Given its strategic position, the Austrians fortified it in a particular way. We will see artifacts from the Malga Zures, barracks, tunnels, gun emplacements and Austro-Hungarian trenches of Segrom, along with many beautiful viewpoints over Lake Garda.

We make a brief stop before setting off on our way back to the valley, this time along an ancient multe path. From there, we are able to enjoy the view of the stunning cliffs of Nago. Along this hike we will cover in total 7,5 kilometers, with a height difference of only 65 meters.

So if you want to join me on this historical trail in Lake Garda, just check the dates below and book your trip! Come discover beautiful and interesting historical sites in northern Italy.

Mountain Guide

Certified mountain and ski guide and is directing since 15 years the Mountain School Mmove (former Friends of Arco). In the past, his passion had driven him for weeks to the solitude of the Alps, of Patagonia, or of the icy heights of the Karakorum to climb famous walls and peaks and open up new routes.

Today his priorities have moved. He wants to share his enthusiasm for the mountains - while working with his guests and in his spare time with his sons, as his father has once done with him. Mauro Girardi is very proud on its enthusiastic and highly qualified team of local Mountain-and Ski Guides, Hiking Guides and office employees. Mmove is not just a mountain school, but is a steadily growing circle of friends, who would like to realize great experiences. We like to Mmove it !!

Mmove is the only mountain school in the Alto Garda region with a guaranteed weekly program and activities for all tastes and the whole family.

The team is formed by 8 IFMGA/UIAGM Guides, so if Mauro is not available, one of the other highly qualified members of the team will be the guide.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
