Home to incredible biodiversity, the Rio de Frades canyon is a spectacular place to explore by canyoning.

The former mining region, located within the mountain range of Serra da Freita, offers beautiful views along the way.

The Rio de Frades offers a series of challenging abseils, as well as pristine pools for us to jump into and swim.

The exciting activities blends with the natural beauty, making it the perfect place for a canyoning excursion. It is actually one of the most popular canyoning areas in the whole country.

Canyoning is the ultimate outdoor sport as it mixes different techniques, such as rock climbing, abseiling, hiking, jumping and swimming.

During World War I, its creeks and canyons were the site of the Mining Company of Northern Portugal, which was owned by Germans. It was used to extract wolfram that was used for the production of weapons.

Today the region offers a wealth of diversity and is home to a number of protected species, including the Iberian wolf.

The level of difficulty for this trip is easy, and can be enjoyed by those aged 12 years old and above. And don’t worry if you’re not comfortable with the jumps, as all of them can be navigated around, so you can keep on your feet the whole time.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger.
