Description

Join us on an unforgettable ski-touring week at Uløya and neighboring Lyngen Islands in the company of an IFMGA-certified guide. Enjoy the most amazing powder runs and stay at our comfy, warm, and fully equipped apartments at the Lyngen Outdoor Center.

Please keep in mind that this is a Group Tour. If you are looking to book a private trip, please check the Private Ski Tour on Uløya island.

Located at the northern end of the famous Lyngen Fjord in northern Norway, the remote island of Uløya is a truly extraordinary place. Unique landscapes of stunning peaks and steep walls falling straight into the sea with lots of powder snow make it one of the most spectacular ski touring destinations in the world.  Uløya and the neighbouring area is the only place on Earth where you can find 1000m-long slopes inclined at almost any angle, falling right into the dark blue waters of the fjords. This is the Arctic, where you can really feel like you are on the edge of the world!

In this program, we will visit the most impressive peaks and slopes of the Lyngen Islands: Uløya, Kågen, Arnøya and also the Kåfjord and Lyngen Alps on the mainland. Additionally, we will have modern and safe boats at our disposal. Some of the options that you can enjoy on this adventure include:

  • Going to the summit of Saeteraksla and Blåtinden (1142m), starting right from the doorstep of the lodge. Enjoy a 15 km ski-tour day, and then return for a cold beer and a relaxing hot sauna.
  • The famous Grand Traverse of Uløya, from Uløybukt to Havnnes - a 20 km ridge-ski route taking in Kjelvagtinden (1104m), Uløytinden (1114m), and Blåtinden (1142m).
  • Boat tours with a beach landing and pick-up to explore the neighboring islands of Kågen and Arnøya with their serene valleys and amazing slopes.
  • Sea fishing. Our skipper can take you to the fishing grounds where you can have your dinner.
  • Kid-friendly activities: Fishing, snow-hole building, games using Arvas (searching and digging out a person, etc.), and easy ski tours.
  • Upon prior request -  ice climbing on virgin couloirs, icefalls, and rock walls.

We offer stays for groups of 3 to 16 people in our very comfortable lodges with breathtaking views. Our guides, all IFMGA-certified with excellent local knowledge, will help you get the most out of this experience.  Finally, our chef will prepare a tasty dinner based on fresh fish and even moose and reindeer. In March and early April, you can see the beautiful Northern Lights!

So if you wish to discover this ski touring paradise in Norway, just send us a request! Book your trip and join us on this trip of a lifetime!

We recommend you to watch this amazing 1 1/2 min video which has been made by a group of Belgians who came to ski with us a few years ago.

FAQs

Which airport should I fly in/out of?

You can fly to Tromsø (3-hour drive to Uløya) or to an airstrip at Sørkjosen (1/2 hour to Uloya).

To make the transfer comfortable, you should arrive in Tromsø no later than 15:00 and have your departure flight after 14:00.

How is the transfer organized to/from the lodge?

There will be a van or minibus waiting for you at the airport in Uløybukt. We will wait for the whole group to gather. Then we will drive to Uløya. The drive takes 3 hours, and there is an additional 10-minute boat ride or a ferry ride to the lodge. Please remember that the airport transfer is not included in the price and needs to be booked separately directly with the lodge.

To make the transfer comfortable, you should arrive in Tromsø no later than at 15:00 and have your departure flight after 14:00.

Which are the available group dates for the coming season?

We have 4 weeks available during the season for individuals wanting to join a group to our ski-touring week at Uløya.

The available dates for 2025 are:

  • 2-9 March
  • 9-16 March
  • 23-30 March
  • 13-20 April

This involves sharing an apartment (with 2 separate bathrooms), but you will get a single room. There are 4 bedrooms per apartment, and the maximum number of participants is 6. Please note that the skiing level may vary amongst the group members although we try to keep it similar.

How experienced do I need to be?

We do not set definite limits and accept touring skiers from beginners to professionals. However, you need to be a competent alpine skier, and it is best if you skied red and black runs.

With open groups, we will try to keep the skiing level relatively consistent, but it’s not always possible.

When is the best time to come?

The season in Uløya runs from late February to mid-May. There are no “best months” – the whole season offers some highlights in every period. May could be somewhat warmer but in recent years May was as good as March and the temperatures and snow conditions were very consistent.

What temperatures and conditions should I expect?

Although we are in the Arctic, the temperatures are relatively mild. You should expect around -10 degrees in March/beginning of April and -5 degrees in late April and May. However, high in the mountains the temperatures may drop even down to -20 degrees with high windchill factors, so you need to be well prepared in terms of windbreakers and down or Primaloft insulation.

Do you accept splitboarders?

Splitboarders are welcome on our ski-touring week at Uløya; it is best to form a private group. To book a private trip you can do it here: https://www.explore-share.com/trip/ski-touring-lyngen-alps-norway-2/

What ski and safety equipment can I rent there and at what price?

We have Dynafit and Majesty Carbon skis together with BCA avalanche equipment. The ski touring set costs NOK 3000 per week, boots cost 1500 NOK per week, and the avalanche set costs NOK 1000 per week.

The equipment needs to be booked in advance.

What hotel do you recommend in Tromsø?

The hotels in Tromsø are very consistent in quality, so any choice is good. Comfort Express or Scandic Hotels are popular choices.

Do you provide vegetarian or gluten-free diets?

Yes, we do; we just need to know your food restrictions in advance.

Can I book a private trip to Uloya?

Yes, we offer this same trip as a private tour. You can check and book it here: https://www.explore-share.com/trip/ski-touring-lyngen-alps-norway-2/

The Lyngen Outdoor Center is located in Norway´s far north, in the eastern part of the island of Uløya.

Located just 500km beyond the Arctic circle and surrounded by stunning fjords (including the famous Lyngen fjord), Uløya is a dream setting to practice a wide range of activities (ski touring, climbing and hiking are an every day occurrence here).

The Lyngen Outdoor Center team is made up of IFMGA-certified guides and outdoor lovers only. We are skiers, climbers and anglers. We created this place to share our knowledge and passion with you.

You won't have trouble finding us: the only route on this part of the island leads straight to us. You can take a ferry to get here or we can pick you up in our "water taxi".

Our very comfortable apartments are located just 50 meters away from the water line. They offer everything you'll need for a skiing or fishing trip with your friends, including a drying room. Our boats are some of the most modern in all of the Lyngen area and a large sized pier is located just 50m away from your accommodation.

What people are saying about Explore-Share

Man

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Maxine

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Valeriya

You’re simply the best!!! :))) Explore-Share made everything easy and stress-free. Will definitely use again.

Joshua

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Cami

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
