Huayhuash

1 Day

May - Sep

Description

Welcome to the full Huayhuash trek. A guided expedition of 14 days with a previous acclimatization process that will allow you to enjoy the adventure in a safe way!

This 14-day full Huayhuash trek consists in walking among the most outstanding corners of this mountain range.

As you may know, the Cordillera Huayhuash has been considered the second most beautiful trekking adventure in the world. Moreover, this version of trek is comparable with the Annapurna trek in Nepal.

I think the Cordillera Huayhuash lives beyond the horizons of the Peruvian people. And the best way to get to know this region is through a cultural experience. That’s why in this full Huayhuash trek, you can visit the area with local people and see it through your own eyes.

All participants must have an excellent fitness level. Keep in mind we must face a maximum altitude of 5100 meters. In addition, some prior hiking experience is mandatory.

I will lead a group of no more than 5 guests. That way I can offer you a safe experience. However, if you are a larger group I can ask a colleague to join us. At the end of this page you’ll find a sample itinerary of the program.

Feel free to contact me and ask me all your doubts. And if you want to book your place don’t wait any longer. Fill out the form and let’s conquer the Huayhuash mountain range together!

Itinerary

Day 1: Huaraz – Pocpa (3450m) – Cuartelhuain (4170m)

In the morning we will drive heading south through the mountain villages of Llamac and Pocpa. The last one is the gateway of the Cordillera Huayhuash.

Here we start walking towards Cuartelhuain along the Rio Llamac. As we approach to the entrance of the Rondoy valley, the view starts opening up into a rolling grassy area. Overnight camp at Cuartelhuain.

Day 2: Cacananpunta Pass (4690m) – Janca (4200m)

Today we will cross the Cacanampunta Pass. After a rest at the top, we will descend to the Quebrada Caliente valley and then move in direction to the Laguna Mitacocha (4200m).

Overnight camp at Janca.

Day 3: Carhuac Pass (4640m) -Lake Carhuacocha (4100m)

On this day we will climb up to the next pass, the Carhuac. Then, on our descent towards Laguna Carhuacocha we will admire excellent panoramic views of several peaks. We will set up our camp above the lake at 4200 meters of height. This camp is the best on the east side of the mountain range, lying beneath the peaks of Yerupaja and Jirishanca.

Day 4: Rest Day at Lake Carhuacocha

We will spend an extra day at the spectacular Carhuacocha Lake. Here we’ll have two options:

  • To enjoy a resting day in the camping spot.

  • An optional hike to visit the 3 lakes of Ganrajanca, Siula and Quesilojanca, below the east faces of the Yerupaja and Siula Grande. We can also take an easy walk around the Carhuacocha Lake, where we can fish. Overnight camp at Lake Carhuacocha.

Day 5: Siula Pass (4834m) - Huayhuash (4345m)

Today we have 2 routes options: the first one follows a demanding and challenging trail to cross the steep pass of Punta Suila.

The other option is to walk via the normal route crossing the Punta Carnicero (4600m), which is an easier trek.

We will camp at the small hamlet of Huayhuash.

Day 6: Portachuelo Pass (4750m) – Viconga (4425m)

We will start walking on the valley heading south towards the spectacular pass of Portachuelo. Then we will descend in direction to the Viconga Lake until we get to the Viconga campsite, below the Puscanturpa and the Cuyoc Mountains. In the afternoon we can have a relaxing bath in the hot springs close to our campsite.

Day 7: Viconga – Cuyoc Pass (5000 m) – Huanacpatay (4363m)

This day we will hike uphill to the second highest pass on our trek. However, after seven trekking days in high altitude, your body is now well acclimatized to cross the Punta Cuyoc Pass. From the pass we will have the most impressive mountain views of the Siula Grande, the Sarapao Yerupja and Rasac.

After that we’ll descend some scree slopes, which lead us to the bottom of a grassy valley and then, to Jatun Cuyoc campsite in Quebrada Huanacpatay.

Day 8: San Antonio Pass (5100m) - Calinca Valley (4100m)

This day we will cross another pass at 5000 meters of height until we reach the San Antonio pass. On the way, we’ll see some vicunas as well as condors overflying. Then we will descend to the Calinca valley in order to get to the Cutatambo campsite, where we’ll spend the night.

Day 9: Rest Day at Calinca Valley

This day is a good time to catch up on some daily laundry issues or just to relax.

For those with enough energy there is an option of trekking up to the Siula Grande Base Camp. Here is the place where Joe Simpson’s movie was filmed, called “Touching the Void”, where we can clearly see the route that Joe followed crawling down the glacier and across the moraine rocks. Finally, we will return to the campsite in Cutatambo.

Day 10: Cutatambo – Huayllapa (3350m) – Huatiac (4350m)

We will walk down along the Calinca valley until we reach the small isolated mountain village of Huayllapa, with beautiful views of the waterfalls. In the afternoon we climb a steep trail to a high camp in the pasture of Huatiac.

Day 11: Punta Tapush Pass (4750m) – Cashpapampa (4450m)

After our breakfast we will walk towards the Tapush Pass. On the trail we will enjoy taking spectacular pictures of the mountains. After that we will descend to our next campsite in Cashpapampa.

Day 12: Yaucha Pass (4847m) – Jahuacocha (4050m)

This day we wil hike up towards the Punta Yaucha Pass, taking a zig-zag trail in direction to the Punta Jahuacocha. Then, a steep descent takes us to Quebrada Whacrish. Following the trail we will get to the Jahuacocha campsite, where we’ll spend the night in tents.

Day 13: Rest Day at Jahuacocha Lake

The first option is to simply rest in the campsite or go fishing to the lake.

The second option is to do a half day hike to a great viewpoint, where we will have the most breathtaking views of the surrounded Andean peaks.

Last night camp at Jahuacocha Lake.

Day 14: Jahuacocha - Pampa Llamac (4270m) - Llamac - Huaraz

After an early breakfast we will cross the final pass of the route, the Punta Llamac. Then, a final descent to Llamac, where our private transfer will take us back to Huaraz.

Mountain Guide

IFMGA/UIAGM guide from Perú.

I was born in the Huaraz city, which is located between cordillera blanca & cordillera negra neighbor of huayhuash mountain range.

My passion for the mountain was born since I was a child, because I watched my father going to the mountain. When I was 13 years old I started going on treks with my father and clients, and as soon as I finished my high school I applied to the high school mountain center studies (CEAM) in 2001 and I graduated as an official mountain guide in 2005.

I have a wide guiding experience in trekking and climbing, organizing, trekking and climbing expeditions into cordillera Blanca & huayhuash in the Peruvian mountains.

I guided successfully in Mexico, Argentina where I climbed conquering the mount Aconcagua at (6959 m).

In Peru I have climbed the most beautiful mountain in the world mount "Alpamayo", and the Peruvian highest peak "mount Huascaran south peak". In 2005 I made a speed record climbing mounts "Alpamayo" & "Quitaraju" in 32 hours 16 minutes. I also opened some new routes to climbing in cordillera Blanca.

Aside from the AGMP / IFMGA certification, I also have the WFR certification.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
