Description

Come climb the Ancohuma peak with me. As your local guide I can lead you through gentle trails while enjoying the stunning scenery of the Bolivian Andes.

During this 6-day program I am leading you will live in first person some of the best Andean landscapes. I will therefore help you conquer the Ancohuma. It is one of the most beautiful mountains in the Cordillera Real.

Ancohuma means ‘white water’ and lies in the east of the famous Titicaca Lake near the town of Sorata. Moreover, thanks to its height (6427 m) we can see it from the lake shore, specially from La isla del Sol.

Together with Mt. Illampú, they form an impressive massif in the region. And although Ancohuma is bigger than the Illampú, it involves an easier ascent. With a proper acclimatization, there are many chances of success to reach the summit. From the high camp, the ascent will take us 4-5 hours.

And if you're in search of a shorter expedition in Bolivia, let me suggest this  3-day ascent in the Condoriri Range I am also leading.

So, contact me if you would like to climb one of the highest peaks in Bolivia. Trust me, you won't regret it!

Itinerary

Day 1: La Paz - Sorata

We will leave La Paz and drive towards the town of Sorata at 2900 m by private vehicle (4 hours ride). This Andean town offers subtropical vegetation and is an interesting contrast to the Illampu massif. We will spend the night in a small hotel in town.

Day 2: Laguna Chijllata

After breakfast, we will begin the ascent to our first campsite at Laguna Chijllata (4,800 m). This day takes approximately 5-6 hours of hiking.

Day 3: Glacier Lagoon camp

The path is very steep and difficult in some sections. The trail follows the glacial moraine and ends at the Glacier Lagoon at the base of some snowy summits. In the afternoon we will set up camp on the edge of the impressive lake.

Day 4: High camp

The ascent to the high camp (5,600 m) begins over a rocky moraine. By the end of the day that route will lead us onto the glacier itself.

Day 5: Summit day - Glacier Lake

From the high camp, the ascent towards the summit is completed in 4 or 5 hours. From there, we will descend to the Glacier Lake.

Day 6: Base camp - Sorata - La Paz

From the base camp, we will make our way back to Sorata, where our vehicle will be waiting to take us back to La Paz.

Mountain Guide

IFMGA/UIAGM Mountain Guide from Bolivia.

I made my first ascent at an early age. I have been guiding professionally for over 20 years, passed safety and rescue courses in the sister Republic of Peru with Swiss trainers, and my training culminated with the French school of the ENSA (National School of Sky & Mountaineering) International certification UIAGM opt / IFMGA.

I conquered the Summit of Bolivar, Humboldt and others in Venezuela, the peaks of Cotopaxi and Chimborazo in Ecuador, Alpamayo and Huascaran in Peru, and also reached the summit of Aconcagua (6954 m) twice the same day from Base Camp ( Plaza de Mulas) in Argentina.

My knowledge of the Cordillera Real in Bolivia is very extensive, so much so that I helped the Military Geographical Institute produce their map of the Cordillera Real (the only official map of the area). I am an active member of the Bolivian Andean Club.
I was also hired by the President of Bolivia (then) - Jorge Quiroga - to climb Huayna Potosi and many delegations of embassies.

Nowadays I work together with a group of local guides, also AGMTB and IFMGA. So if I can't guide myself the trip you request, a colleague of mine will guide to an unforgettable time in the Bolivian mountains!

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
