Description

Situated on the border between Chile and Argentina, the San Jose Volcano (5,856 meters) is an active stratovolcano that belongs to the Andean range. Just 60 kilometers east from Santiago de Chile, the volcano is located above Cajón del Maipo, the canyon of the Maipo River. Follow me on this 5-day program and reach the summit of this incredible volcano!

First of all, we’ll meet in Santiago de Chile at 7 am and head to Cajón del Maipo. During the following days, we’ll approach the summit and explore amazing natural areas, such as glaciers and craters. Additionally, we will also catch sight of other beautiful peaks in the stunning mountainous area surrounding San Jose such as Mount Marmolejo (6,108 meters), which we’ll be able to see from the top of the mountain. Although the difficulty of the ascent is moderate, keep in mind that some sections may be demanding. Therefore, to join this program you will need to have a very good level of fitness.

Itinerary

Day 1: Santiago de Chile - Refuge Plantat

We’ll meet in Santiago at 7 am and depart to Cajón del Maipo. Then, we’ll hike to the Base Camp at Refuge Plantat, situated at 3,100 meters above sea level.

Duration: 4 hours.

Day 2: Base Camp - Camp 1

On day 2, we’ll have breakfast early in the morning and move to Camp 1, at 4,200 meters of altitude.

Duration: 4-6 hours.

Day 3: Camp 1 - Camp 2

On day 3, we’ll start at 8 am and move our camping to Camp 2, at 4,900 meters above sea level.

Duration: 5 hours.

Day 4: Summit Day

This will be a very long and cold day. We’ll start very early in the morning and face the final section to the summit, from where we’ll contemplate an impressive crater. Then, we’ll head back to Camp 2.

Day 5: Camp 2 - Santiago de Chile

On the last day, we’ll start at 9 am and spend 6 hours hiking to our vehicle, that will lead us to Santiago de Chile.
