Take on three of Chile’s iconic volcanoes and discover the breathtaking Patagonia. We’ll start with Llonquimay, continue with Llaima and finish by summiting the famous Villarrica!
Patagonia has captivated travelers for years, offering its visitors everything from beaches and pristine lakes to snowy mountains and glaciers. On this program, we’ll travel from the charming city of San Martin de los Andes in Argentina to Chile, where we’ll explore three of the most important volcanoes of this country.
First, we’ll climb Llonquimay (2,865 m) which will be the perfect peak to start this expedition. With a glacier in the summit crater and down on the south flank, this volcano is one of the most active in the country. Then, we’ll continue with Llaima (3,125 m), one of the largest and also, most active volcanoes. Finally, we’ll climb Villarrica (2,847 m) which is by far the most popular volcano to climb in Chile.
To participate in this program all participants will need some prior mountaineering experience. Additionally, the challenge will require a good fitness level. For a more detailed description of the trip, take a look at the itinerary below!
This is a unique mountaineering adventure ideal for intermediate climbers who are looking to push their skills to the next level. So, if you are ready for this 5-day program in Patagonia, send your request and book your place now!
If you are looking for more mountaineering programs in Patagonia, follow me on this Villarrica Volcano 2-day guided ascent.
Early in the morning we’ll have our first meeting in the beautiful city of San Martin de los Andes where we’ll check our equipment and talk about the details of the program.
Then, in the afternoon, we’ll transfer to the town of Malacahuello, in Chile. It will take us 5 hours to arrive to this town and after a short stop, we’ll continue traveling up north. On our way, we’ll see the spectacular Lanin Volcano, located in the Lanin National Park.
This volcano will be the ideal mountain to start this expedition. It’ll be a magnificent experience before trying to ascend the following ones that are a little more demanding.
Once we finish with our first adventure, we’ll travel to the Malalcahuello National Park where the Llaima Volcano will be waiting for us.
Night in cabins.
This volcano presents a great challenge and participants will have to overcome more than 1,800 meters of altitude and it will take us about 10 hours to complete the entire expedition.
We will go through many places with hard snow and close to the summit it’s very likely that we’ll have to use ropes just to be safe.
Night in cabins
We will take the day off and prepare for our next and last objective: the Villarrica Volcano. On this day we’ll have the opportunity to relax in natural thermal waters.
Night in a hostel in the town of Pucón.
This last volcano is famous for its open crater. Furthermore, on certain days you can hear its impressive sounds and sometimes see some bubbles of magma.
Like the previous volcanos, it presents a softer slope at the beginning but from the middle upwards it poses a more challenging ascent.
The views from the summit are excellent, we’ll see the Andes Mountain Range to the east and the great Villarrica Lake to the west. In total it will take us between 7/8 hours (with a difference of 1,450 meters) to complete this expedition.
Back at the base we will return to San Martin de los Andes.
Night in a hostel.
After enjoying a delicious breakfast all together we’ll say goodbye.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
