huayhuash trek 3

The classic Huayhuash trek is the second most beautiful hiking experience of the world and probably the most incredible of South America. Daniel, a local IFMGA guide, will guide you in this unforgettable 11-day adventure.

11 Days

May - Sep

Description

The Classic Huayhuash trek is the second most beautiful trekking experience of the world.

The Huayhuash mountain range is famous for its spectacular mountainous landscape as well as for its frozen faces and sharp ridges.

With excellent campsites next to the most beautiful glacial lakes and the charming company of our Quechua crew, this trip offers an unforgettable experience to my guests.

The best period to enjoy the classic Huayhuash trek is during the driest season in Peru, from May till September. I can take with me a maximum of 5 guests. However, if you’re a larger group I can ask an assistant to join us.

As for the technical difficulty, all the participants must have an optimum physical level. In addition, it is important to have previous experience in high hiking. Although we will use a day for acclimatization, your body will have to reach a maximum altitude of 5100 meters.

So, if you find this trek interesting get in touch with me. Fill out the form and be part of the Classic Huayhuash trek, a world-famous challenge.

Itinerary

Day 1: Huaraz – Pocpa (3450m) – Cuartelhuain (4170m)

In the morning we will drive south in direction to Chiquian and then continue to the mountain village of Pocpa, the gateway of the Cordillera Huayhuash.

We will then approach to the Rondoy valley, where the view start opening up into a rolling grassy area. Overnight camp at Cuartelhuain.

Day 2: Cacananpunta Pass (4690m) – Janca (4200m)

Today we will cross the Cacanampunta pass, in the northern extreme of the Huayhuash range. After a rest up there, we will descend to the Quebrada Caliente Valley and then turn into a valley that leads to Laguna Mitacocha. Overnight camp at Janca.

Day 3: Carhuac Pass (4640m) - Lake Carhuacocha (4100m)

On this day we will climb up to the next pass, the Carhuac. Once we are there we must descend towards the Laguna Carhuacocha. We will set up our camp above the lake at 4200 meters of height. This campsite is the best on the east side of the mountain range, lying beneath the stunning peaks of Yerupaja and Jirishanca.

Day 4: Siula Pass (4834m) - Huayhuash (4345m)

For this day we have 2 routes options: the first one follows a demanding and challenging trail in direction to the Punta Suila Pass, via some lakes surrounded by stunning peaks.

On the other hand, we can follow the normal route crossing via Punta Carnicero (4600m), which is suitable for people who do not have a good physical shape.

We will finally camp at the small hamlet of Huayhuash.

Day 5: Portachuelo Pass (4750m) – Viconga (4425m)

We will start the day walking in the valley heading south towards the spectacular pass of Portachuelo de Huayhuash. We will spend a short time up there, enjoying the views of the Cordillera Raura, which has amazing snow-capped peaks. Then, we’ll descend towards the Lake Viconga until we get to the Viconga campsite bellow the Cuscanturpa and the Cuyoc Mountain. In the afternoon we will be able to enjoy a shower, swimming in the hot springs close to our campsite.

Day 6: Cuyoc Pass (5000 m) – Huanacpatay (4363m)

We will hike the second highest pass of our trek. After seven days trekking above 4000m, your body is now well acclimatized to cross the Punta Cuyoc pass, from where we will have the most impressive mountain views of Siula Grande, Sarapao Yerupja and Rasac. After that we will descend the scree slope which leads us to the green valley and the Jatun Cuyoc campsite in the Quebrada Huanacpatay.

Day 7: San Antonio Pass (5100m) - Calinca Valley (4100m) - Huayllapa

Today we must cross another pass at 5000 meters of height: the San Antonio Pass. The ascent to the pass is really steep but the effort is well worth it. We usually see vicunas and condors flying overhead. Then we will descend to the Calinca Valley until we reach the Huayllapa Village, where we will set up our camp.

Day 8: Huatiac - Punta Tapush Pass (4750m) – Cashpapampa (4450m)

After our breakfast we will start the hike into a narrow valley to get to Huatiac. From here, we can take nice pictures of all the mountains around us. Then, we will continue walking up to the Punta Tapush Pass. Descent to our campsite, which lies close to some quenual trees in Cashpapampa.

Day 9: Cashpapampa - Yaucha Pass (4847m) – Jahuacocha (4050m)

This day we will hike towards the Punta Yaucha Pass, taking a zig-zag trail until we are in Punta Jahuacocha. Above the pass an optional route takes us to a small peak with magical views of the Huayhuash’s summits. A steep descent takes us to the Quebrada Whacrish. Finally, we’ll arrive to our campsite in Jahuacocha, which is a beautiful camping spot to enjoy the mountains views and rest.

Day 10: Rest Day at Lake Jahuacocha

The first option is to simply rest at our campsite or go fishing to a surrounding lake.

The second option is to make a half day hike to a great viewpoint, where we will have the most breathtaking view  of the huge Andean peaks. Last night camp at Lake Jahuacocha.

Day 11: Jahuacocha - Pampa Llamac (4270m) - Llamac - Huaraz

After an early breakfast we will cross the final pass of the route, the Punta Llamac. We will the do our final descent to reach Llamac, where our private transfer will take us back to Huaraz.

Mountain Guide

IFMGA/UIAGM guide from Perú.

I was born in the Huaraz city, which is located between cordillera blanca & cordillera negra neighbor of huayhuash mountain range.

My passion for the mountain was born since I was a child, because I watched my father going to the mountain. When I was 13 years old I started going on treks with my father and clients, and as soon as I finished my high school I applied to the high school mountain center studies (CEAM) in 2001 and I graduated as an official mountain guide in 2005.

I have a wide guiding experience in trekking and climbing, organizing, trekking and climbing expeditions into cordillera Blanca & huayhuash in the Peruvian mountains.

I guided successfully in Mexico, Argentina where I climbed conquering the mount Aconcagua at (6959 m).

In Peru I have climbed the most beautiful mountain in the world mount "Alpamayo", and the Peruvian highest peak "mount Huascaran south peak". In 2005 I made a speed record climbing mounts "Alpamayo" & "Quitaraju" in 32 hours 16 minutes. I also opened some new routes to climbing in cordillera Blanca.

Aside from the AGMP / IFMGA certification, I also have the WFR certification.

What people are saying about Explore-Share

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Maxine

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Valeriya

You’re simply the best!!! :))) Explore-Share made everything easy and stress-free. Will definitely use again.

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
