Description

Climbing in the Cascades is a wonderful experience. It is also a unique experience because the peaks in the range are often covered in snow. As a result, it is important to know how to properly maneuver through those snowy conditions. And on this introductory level course, which takes place in a classroom, as well as the outdoors, you will learn many of the important skills needed to safely and successfully snow climb. Thus opening you up to future expeditions that can take you to the summits of great peaks like Mount Adams (3,743m) and Mount Shasta (4,322m).

A lot will be covered during this snow climbing course. Some examples of what you will learn include the following.

How to use alpine climbing boots
Kicking steps
How to use crampons and an ice ax
Traversing a slope
Selecting the right clothing and equipment for snow climbing
How to walk in balance with an ice ax
Self arrest techniques
Glissading
Plunge stepping
Assessing snow conditions

With so much to learn, it is hugely advantageous that you will get to immediately put what you have learned into practice on the slopes of the Cascades. Incredibly scenic, this stunning mountain range will provide the perfect backdrop for this snow climbing course.

After completing this course, you can put your newly developed skills to the test on some ascents I offer in the Cascades. Some examples include this trip to the top of Mount Baker, and this trip to the summit of Mount Shuksan.

Price details

This is the price to join a Group Tour.
The price includes the guiding fee, a classroom day session and a day trip to learn and practice skills on the slopes of the Cascades. The price does not include transportation, which we will help you arrange if you would like, lunches, snacks or gratuities. Also, any equipment you may not already have can be rented. Please let us know in advance what items you may require.

Meeting point

We can meet at either a park and ride in Seattle, or at the trail head at a predetermined time.

Participants must be at least 13 years of age. Also, participants should bring the following items with them: waterproof jacket and pants, wool or synthetic (no cotton) clothing layers, gaiters, ice ax, helmet, food and water, glacier glasses and a backpack.
