Famous due to its beauty and its distinctive shape, the Alpamayo is an impressive mountain located in the Cordillera Blanca of the Peruvian Andes. With 5,947 meters above sea level, it is one of the peaks that belong to the Santa Cruz Massif and offers several different routes for climbers around the world.
For this trip, we’ll meet in the city of Huaraz and drive across the Ancash department to Cashapampa, the trailhead of our ascent. If you are interested, you can read a detailed itinerary of the trip below.
The difficulty of the Alpamayo climb depends on the weather and the snow conditions. In general, the level of this climb is difficult and requires a very good physical condition and prior mountaineering experience.

We’ll drive from Huaraz through Caraz to the trailhead, Cashapampa, for about 2 or 3 hours. Then we’ll hike up during 4 to 5 hours to the Santa Cruz Valley, the Llamacorral Camp and, finally, the Ichic Lake (3,950 meters).
We’ll go to the Base Camp (4,400 meters) and then to the Moraine Camp (4,800 meters). This will take us around 4 to 5 hours.
On a 4 to 5 hike, we’ll go to the High Camp (5,100 meters).
On day 4, we’ll reach the summit after a 12 to 14-hour hike. Then we’ll return to the High Camp.
We’ll go down to the Base Camp. This will take us around 5 or 6 hours.
Finally, we’ll return to Cashapampa (6 o 7 hours) and drive to Huaraz.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger.
