Picos de Europa belongs to the Cantabrian mountain range. Even though is not as extensive as other natural regions in Spain, its closeness with the ocean makes it a unique and beautiful place. And within Picos de Europa, there’s one massif that stands out: the Cornion Massif or Western Massif.
The Cornion Massif also encompasses the Covadonga lakes, and the Covadonga sanctuary, which was the origin of the first National Park in Spain, the Picos de Europa National Park. The beautiful contrast between grasslands with intense green colors, the limestone of the Picos de Europa and the spectacular Covadonga Lakes, make this a magical trek!
During our trek, we’ll stay in some of the most iconic mountain huts in the region. Some of them are the Vegarredonda (1,410m), Vegabaño (1,320m) and the Vega de Ario (1,630m).
We’ll walk across many stunning sceneries, dazzling meadows, lovely sheepfolds and amazing viewpoints. But one of the highlights is the Picos de Europa massif, its magnificent peaks are simply breathtaking. Another one is Lagos de Covadonga (1,100m), three small lakes with their own personality. Enol and Ercina, are glacier lakes situated in the asturian part of Picos de Europa. The third lake, Bricial, has water only during glacier melting season, which makes it a unique spectacle.
So don’t miss out the chance to explore this wonderful place. Send me a request and join me on this trek through Picos de Europa.
We start our adventure in Posada de Valdeón, the capital of the beautiful valley of Valdeón. On this day, we will cross one of the most important slopes of the Cornión Massif. From Posada we will go to the Mirador del Tombo, near Cordiñanes, to descend through the Monte de Corona and visiting the Chorco de los Lobos, to the beautiful village of Caín (460m), from where we will enter the spectacular Cares gorge, crossing its most beautiful stretch, crossing bridges and tunnels built in unlikely places, to the Bolín Bridge, where the dizzying ascent of more than 1,000 metres of vertical drop in just 3 hours begins. We start the steep ascent of more than 1,000 metres in just 3 kilometres along the Canal de Trea, towards the Vega de Ario hut (1,630m), where we spend the first night of the trek. From the Vega de Ario hut we can enjoy one of the best sunsets in the Picos de Europa.
On our second day of trekking, we will descend towards the Covadonga Lakes (1.100m), crossing the most beautiful vegas of the Picos de Europa, such as Parres or Belbín. A well-deserved picnic awaits us at the Lagos de Covadonga before we ascend through vegas and into the heights of the Western Massif to the Refugio de Vegarredonda (1,410m), where we will spend our second night. A beautiful day that passes through symbolic places of the Picos de Europa, such as the lakes themselves or the Pozo del Alemán, a place whose name is due to Roberto Frassinelli, an exceptional character.
During this long and hard day, we will follow one of the most classic routes of the massif, crossing it from north to south, through the characteristic karst landscape of the high peaks of the Picos de Europa, where the chaos of the limestone rock reigns between jous and cols, making orientation not easy at all. This is an ideal day to see chamois, a characteristic animal of the National Park. During this classic route, we will be accompanied by the highest peaks of the Massif, passing through Vega Huerta to enjoy the impressive view of the south wall (600 metres high) of Peña Santa de Castilla, the highest point of the Cornión at 2,596 metres. From this vega, from where we will also enjoy beautiful views of the Central Massif, we will descend through the Frade pass towards the Vegabaño refuge (1,320m), located in a magnificent place surrounded by beautiful forests, to enjoy a well-deserved rest after a long and hard day.
Starting from the Vegabaño Refuge, we will make a long and progressive descent through forests, meadows, sheepfolds and the most important villages of the beautiful valley of Valdeón, bordering the Cornión massif on its southernmost slope to reach our starting point and finish this spectacular trek through the Picos de Europa.

You can purchase picnic lunches daily in the huts to avoid carrying extra weight. There are also blankets available in the huts. So a thin lead sheet sack or summer sleeping bag is enough for this trip.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
