Description

Adamello is a mountain range in the Italian Alps, located in the provinces of Trento and Brescia. The highest peaks in the range are Adamello (3554m) and Presanella (3558m).

The Passo de Tonale, which is in fact our starting point, separates this range from the Ortler Alps to the north.

Spring is the ideal time of the year to explore the Adamello glacier ski touring. And ski touring will allow us to discover this vast area in the best way! We will traverse it ascending and descending, immersed in a wonderful setting. Besides, the speed that skis provide makes it possible to travel easier than on foot.

The itineraries that we can follow are endless. The mountains are covered in snow providing quite different routes. Besides, the Pian di Neve (meaning snow plain) is spectacular.

This is the largest glacier in Italy, and it’s your chance to explore it with your skis on! It is 13 square km large, so you can be sure that there are plenty of options.

As I mentioned before, we will begin the tour at Passo de Tonale. For more information about the possible program, have a look at the detailed itinerary below. But bear in mind that it is only an example, that I can modify to suit your wishes. In addition, I can adjust the program if you don’t have enough days, or if you want to go for longer than 4 days.

Itinerary

Day 1: Off piste

We will get to know each other and check the equipment. I think it’s important to see your level before starting out for the mountains, so we will do some off-piste itineraries in Passo Tonale.

Day 2: Presena

From Passo de Tonale we reach the Presena glacier using the lifts. After getting to Passo Presena (2950m), we descend to Rifugio Mandrone (2500m). We rest and have a snack, then descend to Rifugio Caduti dell’Adamello (3040m).

Day 3: Cresta Croce

We ascend to Cresta Croce and the nearby WWI Cannon (“the hippopotamus”). There’s an exceptional panorama of the Adamello glacier. Then we return to Rifugio Caduti dell’Adamello.

Day 4: Passo Venezia

We traverse the glacier to reach Passo Venezia. From there an amazing descent onto the Pisgana glacier follows. It’s more than 2000m of vertical drop.

Level: you need to be a confident off-piste skier, used to ski on all snow types, able to ski tour uphill for 3-4 hours.

Equipment: ski touring skis and boots, climbing skins, ski crampons, poles, avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe, backpack, boot crampons, ice axe, harness, 2 screw gate carabineers, daisy chain or 120cm dyneema sling, thermos, snacks for during the day, first aid kit, sunglasses, goggles, goretex jacket and overpants, windstopper vest, ski touring pants, fleece jacket, breathable base layers, lightweight gloves and thick gloves, wool hat, bandana, sunscreen SPF50, sleeping bag liner, socks, head torch, toothbrush and toothpaste, towel, wipes.
