Description

The Balkan Mountains in Bulgaria are a stunning region with beautiful landscapes. They welcome visitors year round and offer great hiking opportunities! On this guided 2-day hiking trip I would like to show you some of their top spots.

This is an easy two day hike, intended for the enjoyment of the experience and natural environment. On the first day of our trip, we will meet in Sopot and from there, head to our trailhead. We will hike up to the hut and have a couple of options to enjoy the rest of the afternoon. Then, the following day, our objective will be the stunning Vasil Levski peak which will give us a great vantage point of the region. After enjoying the beautiful wilderness, we will return to the hut. Finally,   after lunch we will head back to the town. Depending on the season you decide to visit you will be able to enjoy different weather conditions and landscapes, all beautiful in their own way.

This is not a difficult hike, therefore it is open to all levels. We will not hike to very high altitudes and the terrain is quite friendly. In the winter we may need snowshoes and I can advise you on equipment rental if necessary. I will of course be there the whole way to guide you and ensure a safe and fun trip!

Are you ready for an adventure in the Balkan Mountains? Then book your place now and join me on this 2-day hike in Bulgaria!

You can also join me on a stunning Seven Rila Lakes snowshoeing tour if you are interested in some more winter fun in the region!

Itinerary

Day 1: Meeting in Sopot- Hike to the hut

We will meet at the town square in Sopot. A short transfer will take us to the base of a lift that will take us to the start of the hike. From there, we will walk around an hour to the hut. After we arrive, we can either do a short hike or learn some navigating, maps and basic mountaineering.
Resting in the hut and enjoying some of the local dishes is always an option.

Elevation: + 400m.

Day 2: Vasil Levski peak- return to Sopot

After a proper breakfast in the hut, we will hike for two hours to the top of Vasil Levski peak, also known as Ambaritca. From there, you get a spectacular view over the highest part of the Balkan mountains. If the weather is good, quite a big part of the country of Bulgaria in general is visible from that spot.
When done with taking photos, we will head back to the hut. After lunch,  we will descend to the lift and all the way down to the town.
Elevation: + 380m

Mountain Leader

Hello everyone, my name is Zhivko. I am Mountain guide from the town of Gabrovo, Bulgaria. The place I live is at the base of Stara Planina mountain or the Balkan mountains and therefore since very yearly age I started to get interested in nature and being outside. It all begun with snowboarding, followed by hiking, climbing and mountaineering.
I have been working as guide for the past 6 years in all the mountains in Bulgaria, as well as a snowboard instructor at Bansko ski resort for the winter season. I am also organizing different kinds of group activities, based on mountaineering and outdoor sports.
I became a mountain rescuer in 2012, Senior since 2015.

In terms of experience and personal interest, I have been climbing, hiking and ski touring all over the Bulgarian mountains, and also climbing and hiking in the Alps, the Dolomites, Croatia and Slovenia.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
