Description

Located about 70 km southeast from Paris, Fontainebleau is one of the best bouldering destinations in the world. Join us for 1 or more days and discover this bouldering mecca in France with exciting options for everyone.

Bouldering is a style of rock climbing performed on small and low rock formations known as boulders, without using a rope or harness and falling on a mattress. It is rock climbing in its purest form!

The beautiful Fontainebleau forest boasts an impressive variety of sandstone rock boulders of fantastic quality**. It suits all abilities, styles and experience levels**. You will find from small and easier boulders for children and beginners to overhangs, slabs or aretes that are more challenging.

This world-class bouldering area attracts climbers from all over the world, with its vast amount of chaos or blocks (few meters high rocks) spread over the forest. Despite being a quite small area, you can spend months here and never climb the same boulder sector twice.

For one or more days, we will take you to several different bouldering areas so you can get a taste of the amazing variety of bouldering problems this beautiful forest has to offer. Whether you are looking to venture into this activity, improve your technique or challenge yourself with a harder bouldering experience, Fontainebleau has something for you.

During our time in Fontainebleau, we will help you with every bouldering aspect**, from safety to general climbing techniques** and everything you need to know to enjoy your experience and improve your skills. Please note you can climb in Fontainebleau year-round, although the best time is in spring and autumn.

FAQs

Is it feasible to rent crash pads in Fontainebleau for climbing independently before or after joining you on the guided bouldering tour?

In Fontainebleau, there are several places where you can rent crash pads, including:

  • The "Karma" climbing gym in Fontainebleau (also rents climbing shoes in case you need them);
  • "S'Cape Fontainebleau" sports shop in Fontainebleau;
  • "Le Rempart" climbing gym in Vert-Saint-Denis.

For the day you'll spend together with our guide, he'll take care of bringing the necessary crash pad(s) and chalk.

Is it possible to join a group?

You can join a group for a ½-day bouldering tour!

These tours usually take place on Sundays at 10am. Check the JOIN A GROUP section for upcoming group dates.

Group Size:

  • Minimum climbers: 2 (for a guaranteed departure)
  • Maximum climbers: 4

Please note, the tour will be canceled if the minimum number of participants is not reached two days prior to the scheduled date. In such cases, you can choose to convert your booking to a private session, postpone to another group date, or receive a refund.

Price: €105 per person (includes the guiding fee, crash pads, and chalk).

Meeting Point: Bois le Roi Train Station (approximately 30 minutes from Paris' Gare de Lyon). Please note that the guide cannot wait more than 10 minutes for late arrivals to ensure a quality experience for those on time. The guide will depart with participants who arrive punctually, and unfortunately, latecomers will not be able to join. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.

Could you please specify the meeting point?

In case you do not have a car, the guide can arrange to meet at either the Fontainebleau-Avon train station or the Bois-le-Roi train station, both of which are around a 30-minute ride from Paris' "Gare de Lyon." The choice of the meeting point will depend on the bouldering location the guide will plan to visit with you.

However, if you have your own car, the guide can arrange to meet near the bouldering site. The specific location will be determined based on your climbing experience, your preferences for the bouldering day, and the prevailing weather and temperatures.

What equipment should I have with me?

Please ensure you bring the following items:

  • Your climbing shoes
  • Appropriate and comfortable clothing based on the weather forecast for climbing
  • Sufficient water
  • Some food/snacks.

No need to worry about crashpads and chalk; the guide will handle bringing those.

In case you don't have climbing shoes, there's a convenient solution. The 'Karma' climbing gym, located just 2 minutes away from the train station, offers rental shoes. The guide can make a quick stop there before beginning your bouldering session.

Is it permissible to bring children along for the activity?

Certainly! The guide will be more than happy to accommodate the children's climbing abilities, ages, and preferences when selecting the boulders you'll climb with him. The guide thoroughly enjoy instructing and guiding kids through the climbing experience. So, feel free to bring them along, and the guide will ensure they have a great time on the rocks!

What's the best way to come to Fontainebleau from Paris?

There are two convenient train stations you can use to reach Fontainebleau from Paris: "Fontainebleau-Avon" station or "Bois-le-Roi" station. Both are viable options for your journey and are approximately 30 minutes away from Paris Gare de Lyon by train.

If you decide to take the train, the guide will be there to pick you up from either "Fontainebleau-Avon" or "Bois-le-Roi" station to ensure a smooth transition to our bouldering destination.

Alternatively, coming by car is also an excellent choice, offering more flexibility and convenience. You can enjoy a comfortable and direct ride from Paris to Fontainebleau.

What will occur in case the weather forecast becomes unfavorable?

In the event that the guide determine the weather conditions pose a safety risk for climbing, he will attempt to reschedule your bouldering day based on both your availability and his. As an alternative, you can opt for indoor climbing at the climbing gym in Fontainebleau or one of the gyms in Paris (please note that you would need to cover the entrance fee for the gym).

If, for any reason, these alternatives are not feasible, you will receive a refund for the bouldering session.

Can we make it a 1/2-day bouldering session instead of a full day?

Absolutely, you can get all the information you need about the half-day tour by visiting this link: https://www.explore-share.com/trip/fontainebleau-rock-climbing-bouldering/. During the half-day tour, you'll be bouldering for 3 hours, while the full-day tour offers a 6-hour bouldering experience.

Furthermore, if you're interested, we can also plan an exciting multi-day bouldering tour that spans multiple days, providing you with an even more extensive and adventurous climbing experience.

What people are saying about Explore-Share

Man

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Maxine

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Valeriya

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Cami

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
