Anyone want to climb a via ferrata in the Italian Dolomites? If yes, then join me on this 1-day adventure in Monte Paterno!
The Dolomites are one of Italy’s most spectacular mountain ranges. Located in the northern region of the country, the Monte Paterno mountain is situated just in front of the Tre Cime Lavaredo, one of the region’s most famous landmarks. And because the area was significant during World War I, you will be sure to get a great history lesson in the middle of this active adventure!
We will begin this trip picking up you and your group at a convenient and designated pick-up location. Then, we will head to the Monte Paterno mountain, which is located in the eastern part of the Dolomites for a fun and easy via ferrata. We will then begin this trip with some instruction and safety information about how to use the via ferrata equipment and then start our ascent inside of a tunnel used during World War I!
This trip is relatively easy and intended for beginners, so it is perfect for those of you who have always wanted to give it a try. More still, this is organized as a private trip, so if you and a group have always wanted to via ferrata together in Italy, this could be a great opportunity to do so!

Is this program suitable for beginners, children or older people?
Yes, Monte Paterno via ferrata is a great entry level via ferrata, so suitable for all no matter their previous experience.
What are the highlights of the Monte Paterno via ferrata?
Monte Paterno is unique because of the amazing views of Tre Cime di Lavarado, and the possibility of seeing a WWI tunnel.
Will the equipment be provided or do I need my own? Can I rent? How much is the approximate cost of renting the equipment?
All the technical gear for the Monte Paterno via ferrata is included in the price, so you don't have to rent anything. We will provide the helmet, harness, and ferrata lanyard with carabiners.
What do I need to bring on the day of the tour?
For the day of the tour, you have to bring comfortable clothes for the hike and via Ferrata, and trekking shoes with a fairly stiff sole to be comfortable climbing on metal ladder rungs and walking on rocks. You can also bring a small backpack with water and a snack (keep in mind that lunch is not included).
Do I need to have experience in rock climbing?
No, previous experience in rock climbing is not mandatory for the Monte Paterno via Ferrata. The route can be done even if you never went on a via Ferrata or rock climbing before.
Where can I stay the day before the via ferrata?
We recommend you staying in Cortina, Alleghe or Misurina. But if you are staying somewhere else in the Dolomites, we can indicate you how to get to the meeting point.
Where's the meeting point for this trip?
The meeting point is at Misurina Lake and from there, we will go up to Auronzo Hut parking, which is the hike's starting point. We can indicate to you how to get there from Cortina, Alleghe or Misurina.
Is there a camping spot in Misurina?
There are 2 camping possibilities in Misurina: free camping at the lake or a big parking camp. If you are traveling in a camper, I suggest parking and sleeping with your camper in Misurina the day before the trip.
What time will we start? What is the itinerary for the day?
We will normally start around 9 am, and hike for 1 hour for the approach. Then the via Ferrata takes 2 to 3 hours, and we will have 1 to 2 hours hiking for the descent. Keep in mind this will depend on the pace we take, and the group size, fitness level, and experience. Also, the starting time might vary depending on the weather conditions for the day.

Mountain Guide
I was born in 1961, I live in Campitello di Fassa, in the Dolomites, together with my family. I have two sons, one is a mountain guide, the other is a ski instructor. I am a certified mountain guide since 1982, an instructor of guides, alpine ski instructor and a Federal coach for ISEF.
Being in the mountains has always been my passion, guiding people, teaching them climbing, mountaineering... during the various seasons of the year. I very much enjoy drawing nice curves in fresh powder snow and discover the charm of the frozen waterfalls.
My curriculum and professional mountaineering is made of many ascents and some openings of routes in the Dolomites and the Alps. I climbed in Yosemite Valley (California), Ben Nevis (Scotland) and Norway, Greece, Spain and Sardinia. I did also several high altitude climbs like Mt Denali (Alaska), Ama Dablam (6828m), Cho Oyu (8201m), Manaslu (8163m), Shivling in India (6545m), Cotopaxi and Chimborazo in Ecuador (5897m and 6310m), Patagonia (Argentina).
