Climbing Ben Nevis: Top Outdoor Adventures Awaiting You

Situated in the center of the Scottish Highlands, Ben Nevis is the tallest mountain in all of the United Kingdom. It is a quite popular mountaineering destination year-round, attracting more than 100,000 climbers each year.

The Tower Route is the most common route up to the summit of the mountain and is perfect for less technically skilled mountaineers. The Ledge Route is slightly more challenging, especially during the winter when the peak is coated in snow and ice.

A pretty good level of physical fitness is required to make it to the top, but no prior mountaineering experience is. However, previous experience is preferable for tougher routes up to the summit.

Stunning scenery

From the approach to the summit, Ben Nevis offers some of the most spectacular views in all of Scotland. Head through pasturelands, woods and lochs on the way up, enjoying the quaint Scottish countryside. From the top, take in spectacular views of the Western Highlands, including back down into Fort William.

Rising to 1.345 meters above sea level, Ben Nevis is the highest peak in the Western Highlands and all of the United Kingdom. From the top you will feel like you are on top of the world. Don’t be fooled by its seemingly small height, you will be climbing from only slightly above sea level, meaning it’s a long way up. It will sure feel that way once you get the views from the top.

Year-round fun

Winter, spring, summer or autumn, Ben Nevis is always available for climbing. Make a fairly simple summer ascent via Tower Ridge or challenge yourself and climb through ice and snow to conquer the peak in the heart of winter. Regardless of when you come or how experienced you are, Ben Nevis is always available for a mountaineering adventure.

The Western Highlands have fairly mild winters with cool and wet summers. The range does not get particularly warm and does experience more volatile weather patterns than the rest of the country. During a winter ascent, be prepared for snow and during a summer one, be prepared for thunder. The average mean temperature on the top of Ben Nevis is around freezing.

Any trip to Ben Nevis will involve a flight into the international airport in Glasgow (GLA) From here, you can rent a car and make the few hours drive to Fort William. Buses are also available here, but take a bit longer.
