Climbing Pico de Orizaba: Top Outdoor Adventures Awaiting You

Pico de Orizaba is a volcano with an almost symmetrical conical shape and an elliptical crater around 480 meters in diameter. The surface of the crater is 154,830 m2 and its depth is 300 meters. It is the only volcano in the world that has frozen lava inside it.

Traditional ascent route

The normal route begins on the west side of the volcano towards the North Route. When you reach 4260 meters, you will get to the famous Piedra Grande Hut, one of the most visited by mountaineers. Here begins the last path to the summit, from where you can see incredible peaks of the Neovolcanic Range.

Flora and fauna

The coniferous forest, mainly pine and oyamel, dominates the area. You will also find alpine scrub and zacatonales. As for the fauna, the Pico de Orizaba National Park is home to red lynxes, skunks, volcanoes mice and Mexican voles. In addition, its glaciers not only make climbing more interesting, but also feed several rivers in the area.

Legend behind the ascent

You will be climbing a mountain with a lot of history. It is said that in the first civilizations, lived a warrior named Nahuani along with her eagle Orizaba, who was her friend and counselor. In a battle, Nahuani was defeated and Orizaba ascended to the top of the sky and dropped down. Little by little, on that piece of land, the volcano was formed.

You can get to Mexico City by plane from anywhere in the world and from there, take a bus to the city of Orizaba. You can also fly to the Veracruz airport. Once there, rent a car and drive about 3 hours on very well maintained roads that will take you to the park entrance.
