If you have time, visit Puebla. It has a very picturesque center, with a unique architectural beauty. You must also try its exquisite cuisine and the never-failing "mole poblano". You can also visit the nearby town of Tonantzintla, with an imposing church and the pyramid of Cholula, which has the largest foundation in the world.

Iztaccíhuatl-Popocatépetl National Park

It covers more than 25 thousand hectares distributed between Puebla and Mexico City. There are many trails to enjoy and a wide animal variety consisting of armadillos, deer, rabbits, mice and squirrels. This park was created in 1935 to protect the mountains, so it is one of the oldest in Mexico. As of 2010 it is known as Los Volcanes Biosphere Reserve.

Amazing surroundings

There are very well marked hiking trails around the volcano. Among the most important is the one dedicated to "teporingo", an endemic species of the Neovolcanic Range. Another is the Alpine Trail, a 7-km tour that ends at La Joya viewpoint, where the Iztaccíhuatl ascent begins. Along the way you find waterfalls and native birds.

You must go to Iztaccíhuatl-Popocatépetl National Park, which is located two hours from Puebla and Mexico City, so you can get to any of these two airports. If you go by car, you can take the 150 Mexico-Puebla highway, take the route to Cuautla and then, the one to Amecameca. You have to park at Alsomoni station, where the ascent starts.

The winds are freezing and the temperature can range between 8 and -4 degrees in winter.
