FAQs: Mountain Climbing in Cervinia

What should I know about Mountain Climbing Cervinia?

Sitting just south of the Swiss border, Cervinia is the ideal base for an incredible mountain climbing experience.

While most climbers opt to head here in order to tackle the Matterhorn or Monte Rosa, there are loads of other climbing options available.

As a slight twist on the traditional ascent of the Matterhorn, some guides choose to warm up on Dentes de Herens. The views from this minor peak are spectacular and it’s a great way to spend a week of mountain climbing.

Heading up to Testa Grigia, Punta Maria Christa and the Furgghorn are several other excellent options, all of which are challenging, scenic and less crowded than the aforementioned options.

Why should I choose Cervinia for my Mountain Climbing adventure?

Stunning scenery

The Alps is home to some of Europe’s most beautiful and diverse scenery and nowhere is that more apparent than in Breuil-Cervinia. This little mountain town situated on the Italian and Swiss border offers unfettered access to gorgeous panoramic vistas of some of the most iconic peaks in the range. There are also incredible opportunities to see the alpine meadows, pristine mountain lakes and thick evergreen forests that compose the area.

The Matterhorn

Among the biggest draws for experienced mountain climbers headed to Cervinia is the town’s namesake, Monte Cervino, or the Matterhorn. The southern side of this iconic pyramidal peak is just as scenic as the Swiss side, but slightly tougher, meaning fewer climbers. It’s a great way to get up the peak without the competing crowds. Once you’re at the top some of the best views of Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa from anywhere in the Alps await.

Something for everyone

If climbing the Monte Cervino is not of interest to you, there are plenty of other incredible mountain climbing opportunities. For beginners, the Breithorn beckons. Also situated along the border with Switzerland, this peak is perfect for beginners. For intermediate and advanced climbers seeking out a more challenging route then the slopes of Monte Rosa and Dente de Herens await.

What can I expect from the weather during my Mountain Climbing trip in Cervinia?

During the summer, expect average daily temperatures around 20 ºC in Cervinia, but these drop to freezing on some of the neighbouring summits. Rain is not frequient at this time of year, but afternoon thunderstorms are also not uncommon.

How can I get to Cervinia?

The Turin International Airport (TRN) is the closest major airport to Breuil-Cervinia. From here, there are many busses and shuttles that will take you straight to the mountain village. By car, the trip from Turin to Breuil-Cervinia is less than two hours, which may make renting a car the easiest option.
