What should I know about Mountain Climbing Ecrins?

Boasting more than 45 mountain peaks, the Ecrins massif is a veritable playground for avid mountain climbers.

Aside from La Meije, ascents of many other peaks are also incredibly popular. Among the top destinations are Barre des Écrins (4,102 meters) and Ailefroide (3,954 meters), which are the highest and third highest peaks on the massif, respectively.

Both of these mountains offer excellent two day challenges for intermediate moutnaineers, making them perfect for a weekend trip. They also boast incredible scenery as well as the options to climb over rock, glacier and ice, depending on the route.

Outside of the summer season, the Ecrins are also a popular destination for climbers wanting to try out winter mountaineering.

Stunning scenery

Ecrins National Parks boasts some of the best mountain scenery in all of France, and that’s saying quite something. Climb La Meije

The last major French mountain to be summited presents an incredible challenge for intermediate and advanced-level mountaineers. Views from the top are simply sublime as well, with great views out over the rest of the massif.

During the summer, average daily temperatures in the park range from 15 ºC to 20 ºC, with temperatures often below freezing at the top of the mountains. Summer is also fairly dry, but thunderstorms can occur quickly.

How can I get to Ecrins?

Any trip to Ecrins National Park likely begins with a flight into Alpes–Isère Airport (GNB) in Grenoble. From here, the park can be reached in about one hour by car and a bit longer by bus.
