North Illiniza is one of the two peaks that form the potentially active Illiniza Volcano, located about 100 km southwest of Quito. With 5,126 meters in height, its main difference compared to its brother South Illiniza is that North Illiniza is somewhat steeper. However, its ascent requires no technical climbing skill and can be done in good weather like a hiking activity. It is even one of the best acclimatization mountains in Ecuador and is frequently used as a preparatory climb for higher peaks such as Cotopaxi, Chimborazo and Cayambe.
