Mountain Climbing in Pucon: Top Outdoor Adventures Awaiting You

Located in central Chile in the province of Cautin is the picturesque city of Pucon, approximately 780 kilometers to the south of the capital of Santiago. It rests on the shores of Lake Villarrica, with the active Villarrica volcano standing just 17 kilometers to the south. The name Pucon derives from the Mapuche language, meaning “entrance to the cordillera”.

The city of Pucon is ideally located among the dramatic volcanoes of Chile. Surrounded by natural wonders is the 3,717-meter Lanin stratovolcano on the border with Argentina. The great glaciated volcano of Choshuenco, measuring 2,415 meters. And of course, one of the most active volcanoes in the country, Villarrica, stands just 17 kilometers away.

Breathtaking views

Straddling the eastern shores of Lake Villarrica, Pucon has incredible views of the surrounding mountainside, with the volcano of Villarrica standing beside it to the south. The glaciated peaks pierce through low-hanging clouds, with the slopes sliding down into lakes. The flat fields below show off their lush green and orange colors of the forest.

Rewarding challenges

Guarded by high and striking volcanoes, Pucon provides excellent mountain climbing options that are both challenging and highly rewarding. Some of the most memorable views come from the conic peaks of the volcanoes, which offer sweeping vistas of the surrounding national parks. Climbs here can range from a 1-day ascent to 8 days.
