Hiking in the Aosta Valley: Top Outdoor Adventures Awaiting You

Stretched over just 3,200 square kilometers, the Aosta Valley is chock-full of incredible hiking opportunities. Away from the aforementioned hotspots there are many others as well.

Among them is hiking Monte Cervino, as the Matterhorn is known in Italian. Starting from Breuil-Cervinia, it is possible to hike around the entire base of the mountain, passing iconic sites such as the reflective Lake Schwarzsee along with many others, in just eight days.

Another popular option is to hike from Gran Paradiso to Courmayeur./ This south-to-north trek takes you up the spine of the Graian Alps and right out to the foot of Mont Blanc. This 10-day hike is incredibly scenic and slightly unorthodox, so it may be a bit less busy that other popular routes.

Stunning scenery

The Aosta Valley sits in one of the most beautiful regions of Europe. The region is composed of verdant valleys and mighty glaciated peaks. In between are dense coniferous forests and incredible alpine terrain. Spread across the valley floors and on some mountain passes are idyllic little villages with incredible views as well. The whole region is perfectly set up to be explored on foot.

Head out hut-to-hut

The Aosta Valley is an incredibly popular destination for all kinds of hut-to-hut hiking adventures. From the Tour du Mont Blanc and Via N° 1 to the Gran Paradiso Tour, there are plenty of different options got hut-to-hut adventures. Many last about a week, but several can be abbreviated to last just a few days. Either way, they're sure to be scenic!

Come for the culture

Even when you’re not out in the heart of the backcountry, there is still plenty to see in the Aosta Valley. The valley boasts 10 different castles as well as various vineyards and traditional villages. The food and wine of the area is world-renowned, making meal time in local restaurants and pubs an additional cultural exploration.

During the summer months, the weather for hiking in the Aosta Valley is ideal. Average temperatures on the mountain hover between 8 ºC to 12 ºC. Weather on the mountain can be fairly unpredictable, but the summer months tend to be the driest.

Any trip to the Aosta Valley generally begins with a flight into either Geneva International Airport (GVA) or Turin’s international airport (TRN). From here, various starting points in the valley are only a few hours drive away. Many guides also will opt to meet you in either Turin or Chamonix.
